IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONGERN: Y Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WHITE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats and Caps', and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings.

, My invention principally consists of the following features, viz:

l First, a hat or cap having the hat or cap-frame combined with a detachable crown,substantially as herein- 1 after described.

Second, a hat composed of a brim, brim-former, or frame, and crown, arrangedeubstantially as hereinafter described, so that each of the said parts may be readily detached from or combined with the others.

Third, in a hat or head-covering, in which a brim ofsuitable material is combined with a brim-frame or former, as'hcreinafter described, the method of stretching the said brim over the frame, hy means of draw-strings applied to the brim, so as to'operate in the manner hereinafter specified.

Fourth, the combination, with a hat-brim, of a detachable crown, provided with an imitation band perma- `nently fastened, impressed, or printed on said crown.

Fifth, a detachable crowng'in combination with acap-visor and head-band, when the two latter form a capframe, as hereinafter described. I I

The hat shown in tig.l 1, and the cap represented in 5, are each provided with a detachable crown, z'. e., one which maybe easily removed from or adjusted to the hat-brim or capLframe, -as the case may be. i

The brim, A, which, like the crown, is made o f linen, cltnl'ilor any other suitable fabfriggr material/,is formed and maintained in shape by a hoop or `brim-former, ivhioh is heid in a casing formed in a brim, as described in Letters Patent of the United States heretofore granted me, the fabric being stretched over the frame by means of draw-strings. The `arrangement of these'drawstrings, as shown in iig. 3, is-peculiar., and possesses 'decided advantages over that heretofore employed'in this connection.

The hoop or former-B, which I prefer to make of Paragon wire, or with a U-shaped cross-section, has up'on one part a loop or ring, q, through which, when the hoop is placed in the casing, strings b are passed and tied together, so'as to hold the hoopand brim in their'iroper relations to' each-other while the fabric is being stretched. This latter operation is performed by means of two draw-strings, c d, indicated in red and blue lines in tig. 3. 'lhe ends of these draw-strings are fastened as shown in the drawing, either pair of ends, as, for instance, the ends c1 di, being rst drawn and tied together, the strings, when thus united, constituting in effect one draw-string,\ which passes twice around the outer casing. The remaining ends, c2 t, are then ti'ed together, and, as it is by means of these thatl the crve and tension of the'brim are determined, they should be drawn quite tight, so as to stretch the'fahric over the hoop to the desired extent.

To the brim thus formed I apply a crown, C, made separate and distinct from the brim, as shown in fig. 2. Loops, f, of anydcsired number, are attached to the interior of the crown, which'engage with the hooks g, simi-V larly placed upon the brim adjoining the sweat-band t. When the crown, which, as above stated, may be df any material to suit the fancy of thc wearer, and the brim, are thus united together, they form aperfeot hat, as seen in iig. 1 ofthe drawings. A

It'is of course evident that the junction ofV the two can bc effected by means of buttons,clasps, lacings, or

other suitable fastening-devices, instead ot the hooks and loops shown, but I prefer the latter, as being at once simple and effective. ,E Y

In figs-5, 6, and7 is represented the combination of a detachable crown, D, with a cap-frame, E. The crown is fastened to the frame by means of the button-holes z', which fit`over the buttons c, and strings Z, which are tied to the loop lm in the rear ofthe frame. The cap-frame, shown in the drawings, consists of a visor, n, and band o, formed from one piece'of leather or other suitable` material, but the detachable crown may be of course combined with a cap-frame of any ordinary or suitable construction.

Upon the crown C is-formed a'n imitation' band, by means of two parallel strips of narrow braid, p, sewn tothe crown at a suitable distance apart, and on one side ofthe hat a bow-knot may befadded, if desired. This imitation band, thus permanently attached to the crown, may be formed in other ways, by impressing .or printing it upon the fabric.

Eyelet-holes may be formed in the brim, near the sweabband, for Ventilating purposes, which will be eonceuled from view by the'crown when the latter is adjusted to the brim.

l Some of the advantages resulting from my invention may be briefly stated as follows:

First. Avhat or cap with a detachable crown can be more readily and easily washed and ironed than has heretofore been practicable. l

Second.- Crownsvof various materials and shapes cnn be used on the same hat-brim or cap-frame, to suit all seasons and fashions.

Third. AA hat thus constructed not only admits of free ventilation, but the-crown can be worn independently lof the brim, as asrnoking or travelling-hat.

.llfourtlL An imitation band' for ornamentation can be easily pressed, printed, or sewed on such crown, to permanently keep its place and be washed ,with the crown, thereby effecting considerable economy and saving of trouble in the use of such band.

Fifth. A hat or cap thus constructed with a detaehable crown can be packed for transportation in a small space. 4 A

Having now described the essential characteristics and advantages of my invention, what I claim asV new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hat or cap in which the crown is detachable o'r removable from the brim, substantially as 'and for the purposes herein shown and specified. p

3. In a hat or head-covering in which a'brim of'suitable material is combined with a brim-frame or former,

as herein described, VI claim the combination, with the brim and draw-'casing formed in the outer edge of the l,

fabric of which the same is made, of draw-strings ora draw-string passing twice around the brim, under the arrangement and for operation as shown and set forth.

4. yThe combination of a detachable or adjustable and removable crown with a cap-vizor and head-band.' when the two latter arepermanenty fastened together, or formed in one piece, substantially as and for the pui poses herein shown and specified.
