HAT,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 1'7, 1906.
Application filed October is, 1905. Serial No. 283,279.
To all whom, it may conceiva- Be it known that I, J OSEPH TAYLOR, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Stockport, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is more particularly designed as an improvement on the construction of hats forming the subject of Wildmans patent, No. 574,697, dated January 5, 1897, and in which there is provided a band of elastic material within the hat-sweat with free ends I by means of which the tension of the elastic band may be varied to vary or adapt the opening within the hat-sweat for a comfortable fit on the wearers head.
,3? I have found that the, prior construction referred to is subject to the objection that the user is liable to make the tension of the elastic band too great, with the result that on wearing the hat the part of the elastic band in front of the forehead is apt to make a mark on the wearers forehead.
My resent invention consists of means for overcoming this objection, and this I do b so securing the elastic band, whether actually in one piece or two pieces, to the inelastic part of the hat sweat or liningthat is, either the pad or leatherthat if there is any portion of elastic left in front of the forehead j of the wearer behind the hat-sweat that portion of such band will not be stretched by the tying up of the free ends.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an under side view of the hat, and Fig. 3 is an'enlarged perspective view of the hat-sweat and elastic band. Fig. i is a perspective view illustrating a modification. I
In the drawings, A is the hat, which may be of straw, felt, or other suitable material.
B represents the leather of the hat-sweat, and O represents the pad or foundation stitched. or otherwise secured to the leather and by which the hat-sweat mav be secured hat sweat at points name to this specification in two subscriblng witnesses.
in any usual or suitable way to the hat by stitching or otherwise.
D is the elastic band, which is back of the hat-sweat and which is preferably threaded through a folded strip of material E, secured to or forming part of the pad or foundation. This elastic band may be made of either one or two pieces and at the back of the hat has free ends d d, which may be tied together to give any desired tension, the free ends being indicated tied up by dotted lines in Fig. 1. At a point which should be about opposite to the temples of the wearers head I secure this band D by clamps F, Fig. 3, or other suitable means to the inelastic pad or foundation or to the leather of the hat itself, so that in front of the forehead of the wearer there may be no stretchable elastic band that is to say, stretchable by the tightening of the free ends at (1, already described. For convenience of manufacture, however, the elastic band may extend all around the hat, and by reason of the clamps F or other suitable securingmeans the tightening up of the free ends of the band D will not stretch that portion of it which lies between the clamps or other securing meansthat is to say, in front of the wearers forehead. As an eXample of other securing means to attach the elastic cord or band fixedly-in relation to the opposite the wearers temple I may mention stitching, as indicated at F in Fig. 4.
I claim as my invention A hat provided with a sweat, an elastic band behind the sweat and having free ends toward the back of the hat, with means fixedly securing the elastic band to the hatsweat at points near the wearers temples, for the pur mse described. In testimony whereof I have signed my the presence of JOSEPH TAYLOR Witnesses:
