UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLINTON R. BLACKWOOD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,913, dated June 1, 1875; application tiled Aprn 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON R. BLACK- WOOD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Hats, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide convenient means for fastening to the head ladies hats or bonnets, or the hats of children 5 and it consists in a spring-holder attached to the hat, made in either one or more parts.
Figure l represents the holder a-s applied to the head; and Fig. 2 is a section of the hat, showing the holder attached to the hat.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending` parts.
A represents the hat. fastener.
B is the holder or This fastener may be made of any suitable material, as metal, whalebone, vul# eanized rubber, or of any material suitable for the purpose. It may be made in any form, so that, when attached to the hat it will hold the hat to the head by its elasticity or friction when the ends C are made to bear upon the sides ot' the head, substantially as seen in Figml.
In this example of my invention the fastener is made in one piece, and in the form of a bow, the curve of the bow being perforated and fastened to the inside of the hat with thread, leaving the ends C to hang down, so as to bear upon the back part of the head.
The holder may be curved in any manner desired.
The holder may be fastened to the head in any suitable manner, so that the ends C will press, by their elasticity or friction, upon the sides of the head, and securely hold the hat or bonnet in position on the head.
The holder may be perforated with holes its whole length, so that flowers or any ornamental trimming may be attached thereto.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 In combination with a hat for ladies or children, a bow-shaped spring-fastener for keeping the hat in position on the head, substantially as seen in the drawing.
CLINTON It. BLACKWOOD.
