Description

(No Model.)
W. M QGONNELL.
SHUTTER FASTENER.
No. 350,834. Patented Opt. 12, 1886.
WITNESSES:
* Nrrnn STATES ATEN'I rrrcn.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,834, dated October 12, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MoOoNNnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Iniprovenient in Shutter-Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which k Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of the portion of a shutter-fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof on a reduced scale, showing the operation of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention relates to an improvement in the turn-buckle or catch shown in the Letters Patent of the United States No. 343. 333, granted to me on the 8th day of June, 1886; and the invention consists in forming said catch with a shoulder on each side, so that the fastener will be unfailingly engaged with the catch, as-
will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings,'A represents a shutter of usual construction.
Brepresen ts the fastener shown in the Letters Patent aforesaid consisting of a bar with a hook, O, at its end and laterally-projerting wings D near said end, the bar being hung to the inside of the shutter, so as to freely depend therefrom.
E represents a turn-buckle or catch, the same consisting of a bar having its rear end pointed and formed near said end with a shoulder, E, whereby it may be driven into the wall of the building. The front end of the Application filed September 9, 1886. Serial No. 213,100.
(No model.)
bar carries a head, F, which is pointed of the form of a spear-head, leaving at opposite sides of the back of said head the shoulders G G.
In opening the shutter the hook O strikes the inclined side of the nose of the catch and rides on the same until it reaches the shoulder G, when it drops behind said shoulder, as
shown in Fig. 2, thus locking the fastener tothe catch, and consequently reliably holding the shutter in open position.
Should the shutter be opened forcibly, the catch flies laterally, owing to its centrifugal action, and as it returns against the shutter it strikes the opposite side of the nose of the catch and rides thereon until it reaches the shoulder G, when it drops behind said shoulder, thus locking the fastener to the catch and reliably holding the shutter in open position, this action not being possible in the catch shown in the Letters Patent referred to, as the location of the hook on the side of the catch opposite to the shoulder F leaves it disengaged from said catch, so that the shutter may be blown closed or left to rattle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A shutter-fastener consisting of a depending bar freely secured to the shutter and a catch formed of a bar having a pointed head with shoulders G G on opposite sides of the back thereof, substantially as described.
W. MOCONNELL.
