Description

(No Model.)
G. F. MOYER. WINDOW SHUTTER EASTENER.
No. 588,463. Patented Aug. 17,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. MOYER, OF MILLERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA. I A
WINDOW'-SHUTTER FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,463, dated August 17, 1897.
Application'filed April 17 1897.
To all whom it may concern..- v
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MOYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millersburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shutter Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to shutter-fasteners.
My object is to provide a device of extremely simple and cheap construction which will be adapted to hold the shutter in open position in an improved manner, so that it Will be prevented from being rattled by the wind.
A further object is to provide a novel form of shutter-fastener which will be adapted to automatically lock the shutter when the same is open and which can be easily manipulated to automatically eject-the shutter when the latter is secured.
Having the foregoing objects in view, the invention consists of a shutter-fastener of improved construction, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the device in use, and Fig. 2 an enlarged plan view showing the device in detail and the manner in which it locks the shutter.
' The numeral 1 designates a portion of a building, and 2 the shutter.
My improved fastener is shown at 3, the same being connected to the building in such position that it will fasten the shutter when the latter is open.
telling-screw 9,'which passes through the end Serial No. 682,567. (No model.)
portion of the base and into the building. It will be observed that owing to the construction of the device the loop 5 and the catch 6 are both springy or resilient, and hence the same can .be sprung as shown in dotted lines.
When the shutter is thrown open, it abuts on the catch and springs the same aside and then strikes on the loop 5, compressing the same against the wall. The catch 6 flies back and looks over the edge of the shutter, as
. shown, whereupon the latter is secured in position and will not rattle or become loosened. Wheneverit is desirable to release the shutter the catch is pushed aside, whereupon the loop expands and the shutter is automatically ejected.
Although in the present instance I have described the device as being a shutter-fastener, yet of course it is applicable to doors, gates, &c., and, further, there are slight changes of construction which could be resorted to in carrying out the invention without detracting from any of the advantages thereof, and hence Ireserve unto myself the right to make all .such changes as properly come within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 A shutter-fastener formed of a single piece of resilient material which hasa straight portion constituting a base and is bent into. a closed loop and has its end portion extended outwardly substantially at rightangles to its base and formed into a free spring-catch, a fastening device securing a portion of said loop to the base, and said spring-catch and loop being adapted to hold the shutter between them and the loop being compressed when the shutter is thus positioned and adapted to automatically eject said shutter when the catch is detached therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES F. MOYER.
