ARM-SUPPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,549, dated August 3, 1886.
Application filed February 9, 1886. Serial No. 191,368.
(No model.)
sition with relation to the said board A. The
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocahontas, in the county of Pocahontas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ArmSupports; andI do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appe-rtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisinvention has relation to improvement-s in arm rests or supports for books and the like; and it consists in the construction, novel arrangement, and adaptation of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
The object of the invention is to provide a support for the arm in writing, which may be readily adjusted to the desired horizontal position. This object is accomplished by the means shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device in an inverted position, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modification.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates a board, which may be of the form usually employed as an armrest for books. Near the outer end, on the under side of this board, I provide one or more hinged supports, B. These supports are designed to fold in the direction of the board, and are provided with pivoted hinge-braces G, which have at their free ends a rectangular arm, D, which is derectangular branches of the braces are provided on their under edges wit-h recesses, as shown, to receive the springs E. These springs are secured at their inner ends in fixed bearings F, arranged on the under side of the board A,and adjacent to the hinged supports. These springs are arranged above the tooth-bars, and are designed to hold the rectangular branches of the braces in engagement with the said rackbars.
It is obvious that one or two supports may be employed, according to the fancy or dicta-` tion of the mechanic, and their position or location changed at pleasure without departing from the spirit of my invention. Itis also obvious that when two supports are used a rod connecting them may be employed, whereby both may be moved equally and simultaneously.
Having described this invention, what I claim is l. The combination, with the arrn-board, ot' one or more hinged supports, a pivoted brace having an arm or extension adapted to engage a toothed bar on the under side of the said board, and a spring for holding the said arm in engagement with the toothed bar, substantially as specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, an arm-rest for books, consisting of the main board, the hinged supports on the under side thereof, the braces pivoted to the said supports, the toothed bars arranged on the under side of the boards to be engaged by the braces, and the springs designed to hold the braces in engagement with the said toothed bars, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. M. HUNT.
