Description

W. L. SALVAGE. MANUSURIPT HOLDER.
Patented Sept. '15, 1896.
ATTORNEVJ,
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. SALVAGE, OF TAMPA, FLORIDA.
MANUSCRIPT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,660, dated September 15, 1896. Application filed March 16, 1896. Serial No. 583,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. SALVAGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manuscript- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
This invention relates to manuscript-holders for use by copyists, type-writers, and others; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is provided with a pointer for indicating the line which is being copied or any part or word thereof; and with this and other objects in viewthe invention consists in the device constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a front View of my improved manuscript-holder; and Fig. 2 an edge View thereof, showing the means by whichit is supported.
In the practice of my invention I provide a plate or board A, which is preferably oblong and rectangular in form and pivotally connected with the upper end, and at the back thereof is a wire brace or support B, and I also provide elastic bands 0, which are adapted to be passed around the plate or board of the holder and to securely hold the manuscript in place.
Secured to the front of the plate or board, and preferably at the right-hand side and lower portion thereof, is a pointer D, which may be of any desired length, and this pointer D is connected with the plate or board by means of pivotally-connected bars d, one of which is also pivotally connected with the pointer and the other with a plate or board.
The pivotal connection of the pointer with the levers d and the pivotal connection of the latter. with the board is such that the pointer D may be swung into any desired position, so as to indicate any desired point on the plate or board or any desired line, word, or words in the manuscript to be copied, and be held in any desired position, and I also preferably countersink in the outer surface of the plate or board a mirror E; but this feature is of course immaterial and may not be employed. I may also substitute other devices for the elastic bands 0, and it will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective manuscript-holder and one which is comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In a manuscript-holder the combination with, a plate or board having a pivoted support in the back thereof, of a pointer having a plurality of pivoted arms the free end forming the pointer and the last of the series pivoted to the front surface of the plate or board, also means for holding the manuscript in proper position, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signedmy name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 9th day of March, 1896.
