I. B. KELLER.
SHIRT.
Patented' May 4, 1886.
UNITED STATns PATENT Ormea.
ISAAC B. KELLER, OF `LEBANON, PENNSYLVINIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,017, dated May 4, 1886.
Application tiled December 12, 1885. Serial N0.1S5,506. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, Isaac B. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of LebanonV and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a back view` of a shirt made in conformity with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the sleeves and collar-band removed, and the lap-over and one of the back yoke-sections partly broken away; Fig. 3, a sectional view,on an enlarged scale, taken on line x x of Fig. 1.; Fig. 4c, a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on line y y; Fig. 5, detail views of the several strips forming the lap-over and joining-pieces; Fig. 6, a similar view of one of the inside yoke sections," and Fig. 7 a detail view of one of the extension re-enforcement yoke-sections.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in shirts; and the object thereof is to provide means whereby the shirt is materially increased in strength around the shoulders or yoke, and insure its fitting much nicer, as well as more comfortable to the wearer. rIhese objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the shirt, and B the sleeves thereof.
To the upper or shoulder portions of the back oi' the shirt'are secured by stitching, in
"the ordinary manner, yoke-sections C, of the form shown in Fig. 6, each section extending across the back of the shirt from the slit or opening therein to the sleeve, where it joins the body at the shoulders. Over these sections C are secured by stitching re-enforce sections D, of the form shown in Fig. 7 ,which also extend across the back of the shirt and down to the armpits thereof, being stitched into the sleeve-holes with the sleeve. The neckband a is provided with a button-hole, b, as is also the re-enforce section immediately above the lap-over, as shown at c, in order to well secure the back of shirt from gaping. The lap-over consists oi three distinct pieces or sections, combined and attached as follows, viz: The left side of the slit or opening in the back of the shirt is secured the joining piece or strip E along its straight edge, which forms the lap-over, and which is strengthened by stitching on the outside of strip E a lapover st rip, F,thereby securing utility, strength,
l and durability, a protection-piece, d, secured transversely across the lower end of the lapover strip F, resisting the possibilityof tearing down the bacleopening This protection piece or stay d, I lay no claim to in the present application, as it forms the subject of an application tiled April 8, 1886, Serial No. 198,181.
That portion of the shirt-back coming upon theinner side of the slit or opening has stitched to its edge the strip Gr, which, together with the strips E F, forms a perfect lapover, which, when buttoned at b c,will prevent the opening in the back from gaping.
rIhe strip E, which forms the joining-piece to the left edge of the slit in the shirt-back,
serves as a foundation or inside lining to the lapovcr strip F when the latter is stitched to its place.
The addition oi' the inner yoke-section, C, and revenforce D, secured to and over the inner section, form together a strong reeni`orcement underneath and back of the arms, thus rendering the shirt more durable, nicer fitting, and in every way superior tothe shirts in ordinary use.
I am aware that it is common to provide a shirt in which a portion of the sleeve material extends up to the eollarband; also that it is not new to extend a yoke portion out to the armhole of the shirt. My invention differs from either or both of these constructions. I provide a shirt with a yoke, C. In addition to the body A and yoke C, I provide a re-enforce, D, which covers the yoke and extends over the outside thereof to the armhole, and is sewed in with the sleeve. It also extends down over a portion of the body A to the armpit.
NVhat I claim as new islThe shirt'described, consisting of the body IOO A and yoke G arranged as shown7 and the reenforee D, extending from the collar-band to the sleeve-hole exterior to the yoke and stitched in with both collar-band and sleeve, a portion of the re-enforoe extending over the body A and along the armpit, and the Whole arranged to serve as set forth.
In testimony that I Claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC B. KELLER.
