UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID LUEIN, on SACRAMENTO CITY, CALIFORNIA, AssIGNoE on CNE- HALE rro EIAEEIs vvEInsToCx, on sAME PLACE.
REVERSIBLE SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,860, dated May '30, 1882.
Application filed February 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID LUBIN, of Sacramento City, in the county of Sacramento, and in the State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to shirts of wool or other material which open in front; and the nature of my invention consists in the combination, with shirts of the above kind, of a chest and back protector, which can also be opened infront, as will be understood from the following description.
.In the annexed drawings, Figure] is a front view of my improved shirt, showing the bosom unbuttoned and turned back to expose the bosom part of the combined chest and back protector. Fig. 2 is aview of the combined chest and back protector detached from the shirt. the shirt.
The following descriptionof my invention, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand it.
A designates the body of the shirt, BB the sleeves, and C the bosom, which parts may be constructed in the usual well-known manner.
It will be observed the shirt is of the kind wherein the bosom C is united permanently on one side to the body A, and is provided with button and hole fastenin gs for attaching it to the opposite side of the center and at the bottom to the body, as is shown in Fig. 1.
Shirts of this kind are generally worn by laborers, and are usually made of woolen goods, so that they are made to serve both as the under and outer shirt. In consequence of having the shield-bosom open on one side, the breast of the wearer is very much exposed to currents of cold air, which enter through the openings necessarily left between the buttons Fig..3 is a horizontal section through V or otherfastenings. To prevent this entrance of cold air I have invented the combined breast and back protector. (Represented clearly by Fig. 2.) This is preferably made of a single piece of any suitable fabric, and consists of a back portion, D, a front portion, E, shoulder portions F F, formed substantially as shown, a neck-hole, Gr, and a flap or bosom portion, H, which latter is open on one side only and provided with suitable fastenings, a. This protector is stitched to theback, front, and the shoulder parts of the shirt, inside thereof, the opening of the ap H being always arranged on that side of the bosom of the shirt which is opposite to the opening of the tlap or bosom G, as shown in Fig. l.
It will thus be seen that the two openingsy of the bosom -daps do not come together. Hence the breast is well protected from currents of air.
By making my combined breast andl back protector lof one piece of goods I have no seams at the shoulder portions F F. Consequently these portions will re-enforce and strengthen the seams at the shoulders ofthe shirt-body A.
If desired, I may make the frontand back portions of the protector of two thicknesses, and pad them, thus affording still greater protection to the body of the wearer. p
In lcarrying out my'invention I shall manufacture some shirts so that they are reversible-that is to say,`the parts of the shirt are sewed together by reversible seams, which present the same appearance on both sides of the shirt. Such shirts, while they will be less expensive than twoy shirts, will practically serve the purpose of two shirts,`for when one side is soiled the other may be exposed to view.
The reversible shirts may be made of one color, or with one design on one side and a different color or design on the opposite side. The apsO and H will be provided with suitable means for fastening their free edges to either side of their respective parts.
v I am aware that shirts have been made with two lapping bosom-flaps. I am also aware that chest-protectors have been made with a single double-ply ap and a double-ply back. In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in These features I do not broadly claim. presence of two Witnesses, this 1st day of Feb- 1o Having described my invention, I claimruary, 1882. The combination, with a shirt having a bo- DAVID LUBIN 5 som-flap open on onc side only, of a breast and back protector having a ap opening opposite Witnesses: to the said bosom-Hap, substantially as and for C. M. ALEXANDER, the purposes described.
H. AUBREY TOULMIN.
