This invention relates to reversible coats having outer and inner faces of different fabrics, either one of which may be worn on the outside.

In the usual practice in the art it has been cutomary to make the body portion of the garment and the collar of the identical fabric, while the lapels were of the opposite fabric.

An object of this invention is to provide a reversible coat having the collar and lapels of the same fabric as the body no matter which face is turned outwardly, and to make it possible to produce a reversible coat which will have as good an appearance as a garment of non-reversible character.

Another object of this invention is to provide a reversible coat having lapels which are made of separate members or separate pieces of material, and which are stitched to the body of the coat, instead of being in one piece therewith as heretofore.

Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a reversible coat of this nature which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, and well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which form part of this specification.

Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coat having my invention appliedthereto.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the coat, showing the right hand portion of the collar and lapel turned up.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the coat, showing the left hand portion of the collar and lapel turned up.

Figure 4 is a front view of the coat, showing the collar and lapel made of the same fabric and the inner side of the coat made of a different fabric.

Figure 5 is a front view of a fragmentary portion of the coat shown in Figure 4 in reversed position.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary view similar to that shown in Figure 5, showing a modified garment nected by slide fasteners.

'Figure 7 is a perspective view of a reversible coat having a modified lapel.

Figure '8 is a sectional View of a lapel shown in Figure 7, the section being taken as on line 8-8.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the numeral I0 indicates a reversible coat comprising an outer fabric H which may be made of water repellent cravenette serge, and an inner cheviot fabric l2, used for fair weather.

The reversible coat I 0 comprises two complete coat elements, either of which may be worn on the outside while the other forms a lining, according to which of the fabrics has been turned outward.

As shown in the drawings, the coat element II has a collar [3 and lapels I4, M, made of the same fabric. The coat element l2 has a collar l5 and obliquely triangular lapels l6, l6, made of the same fabric.

As shown in Figure 4, the lefthand lapel M has been made larger and longer than the right hand lapel 14, that is, there is sufficient fabric in one lapel which when the coat is buttoned up, overlaps the lapel fabric on the oppositeside. Similarly, as shown in Figure 5, in the reversed position of the coat, the left hand lapel l6 has been made larger than the right hand lapel I6.

The unequal obliquely triangular areas of the lapels employed for this invention, make it possible to position the seams l1 and [8 shown in Figure l, and the seams I9 and 20 shown in Figure 5, in offset relation. This prevents the superposition of the seams and the resultant bulge of the garment fabric at the seams which would impair the appearance of the reversible coat.

As shown in Figure 4, buttons 2|, 22, have been secured upon the coat, care being taken that the buttons on each side match the respective coat faces or body fabric elements, and the buttons on one face are secured opposite the buttons on the other face.

Button holes 23, 24 have been formed on each side of the coat at the front edge in alignment with the buttons. The buttons are positioned immediately inward of the button holes, so that the coat may be buttoned over in either direction, no matter which side of the coat is exposed outwardly. When it is desired to reverse the coat, this is readily accomplished by turning the sleeves inside out.

As shown in the drawings it will be noted that the buttons are positioned in spaced relation from the vertical marginal edges of the fronts of the coat a greater distance than the buttonholes, whereby the superposition of a lapel of large area with a lapel of small area is augmented.

As best shown in Figure 3, the lapels of the reversible coat Ii] have been formed with button holes 26, 21. A button 28 has been provided on the lapel, just under the collar. Another button (not shown) appears on the other lapel.

As shown in Figure 6, the modified reversible coat It) has inner and outer coat elements I I and I2 which are joined by a slide type fastener 30, commercially known as the zipper type, and comprising complemental metal fasteners 3| and 32 on the edges thereof, whereby the edges may be released from each other or intimately closed throughout their lineal extent.

The fasteners are of the concealed type and are shown in the drawings only for the purpose of illustration, it being understood that any fastener means adapted to latch and form a metal seam that can be completely separated by the manipulation of a sliding body from end to end of the edges of the coat elements, may be used.

Figure 8 shows a cross-section of the lapel 33 shown in Figure '7. It is to be noted that the lapel 33 comprises two outer layers of fabric 34 and 35 of different colors.

Figure 9 shows a reversible coat 36 having a modified lapel 31, shown in cross-section in Figure 10. The modified reversible coat 33 has slits 38 approximately at the folding line of the lapels. Auxiliary lapels 39 of the same shape as the lapels of the coat are inserted into the coat by passing the long edge of the lapel, which has a stitched fold or bead 40 through the slits 38; the bead holding the auxiliary lapel in position, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. Snaps or buttons 41 may be used to fasten the point of the lapel against the coat. The auxiliary lapels 39 may be two faced like the coat and so positioned that when the coat is worn, the face of the lapel 39 that shows will be of the same material as the outside face of the coat.

It is to be noted that an advantage of'this invention is that it makes it possible to manufacture a reversible coat in. which the coat in its entirety, when in wearing position on the user, will be of one color all over the exposed surface, the same fabric appearing throughout, and that the coat may be made to conform to various fashions in favor.

a In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a reversible coat comprising inner and outer faces of different color fabrics, said coat having lapels made of separate oblique triangular members stitched to the respective body fabrics, the lapel on the left-hand side of said coat being of larger triangular area and longer and adapted to overlap the complemental lapel on the righthand sid of said coat, the lapels and collar on one face of said coat being of different color fabric than said face fabric, each face of said coat in wearing position having a coacting collar, lapels and body portion of identical material, the fronts of said coat on each face thereof having buttons and buttonholes, the lowermost points of the lapels on each face of said coat being positioned closely adjoining the uppermost button, to cause said larger lapel to overlie the lower portion of said smaller lapel, auxiliary lapels secured to said coat, said coat having slits at the folding lines of said lapels to permit one of said auxiliary lapels to be passed through one of said slits into concealment between the inner and outer faces of said coat, said auxiliary lapels having beads serving to hold said auxiliary lapels in said position of concealment, the unequal areas of said lapels causing the seams joining said lapels to the body fabrics of said coat to be in offset relation.

2. In a reversible coat comprising inner and outer faces of different color fabrics, said coat having lapels made of separate oblique triangular members stitched to the respective body fabrics, the lapel on the left-hand side of said coat being of larger triangular area and longer and adapted to overlap the complemental lapel on the righthand side of said coat, the lapels and collar on one face of said coat being of different color fabric than said face fabric, each face of said coat in wearing position having coacting collar, lapels and body portion of identical material, the fronts of said coat on each face thereof having buttons and buttonholes, the lowermost points of the lapels on each face of said coat being positioned closely adjoining the uppermost button, to cause said larger lapel to overlie the lower portion of said smaller lapel, the unequal areas of said lapels causing the seams joining said lapels to the body fabrics of said coat to be in offset relation.
