' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORSON WHITE SMITH, OF OHARLEVOIX, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FORREST S. BLANGHARD, OF SAME PLACE.
-CUSPIDOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,016, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed December 11, 1884. Serial No. 150,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORSON WHITE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlevoix, in the county of Gharlevoix and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to cuspidors designed for use in passenger and street cars, dentists chairs, &c.; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character with a valve, whereby the contents thereof may be readily discharged, and the same cleansed with but little trouble.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for securely holding the valve in position to prevent the leaking of the contents of the cuspidor, especially in cases when the same is used in places where the leaking of the contents would prove injurious.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide the cuspidor with a series of bars or other means across its mouth, for a purpose to be explained.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means for opening the valve of the cuspidor, to allow the discharge of the contents of the same.
With these ends in view the invention consists in a cuspidor having a flange upon its upper edge for its attachment and a suitably-arranged opening.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a cuspidor having a suitably-an ranged opening, of a valve to close the same.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a cuspidor having a suitably-arranged discharge-opening, of a valve to close the same, and means for holding said valve in position.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cuspidor constructed in accordance 50 with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing the cross-rods in elevation. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showing the rods in section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the means employed for opening the valve.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the floor of a car, which has a hole or opening of a size sufficient to receive a cuspidor, B, and allow an annular flange, a, at the upper end 6c thereof, to rest upon and be supported by the sides of said opening. The cuspidor B is preferably of an inverted-truncated-cone shape, thus providing sloping sides, which facilitate the passage of matter to the bottom of the cus- 6 5 pidor. The flange a at the upper end of the cuspidor is provided at suitable intervals with holes or openings for the passage of screws or equivalent fastenings for its secure attachment. Extending across the top or mouth of the cus- 7g pidor are a series of bars or rods, 6, preferably arranged parallel, as shown. By the use of these rods or bars a grating is formed, which is on the same plane as the floor, thus covering the mouth of the spittoon and obviating the possibility of any accident that would be liable to occur by a person inadvertently stepping in or upon the mouth of the cuspidor.
0 represents spiral springs, which are arranged upon opposite sides of the cuspidor, so and preferably upon the outside of the same. These springs O are attached to the upper end of the cuspidor at one end, and have their lower ends bent to form hooks d, for their attachment to a valve, D, of the same form as the opening in the cuspidor, said valves being adapted to close said opening and form a tight joint, and be held in place by the spiral springs G. If desired or found preferable, these springs 0 may be inclosed by tubes E, open at their 0 upper and lower ends, as shown.
For opening the valve D, I have provided a rod, E, having the enlarged flattened lower end, 6, and a handle at its upper end. Near the upper end of the rod is secured a flat spring, 9, having the outwardly-turned lower end, 72, which forms a seat.
To discharge the contents of the cuspidor and clean the same, the spring is depressed to admit of the passage of the rod between the bars. The rod is passed between the bars, and the valve lowered from the opening of the cuspidor. The spring is then released, and the bent end of the same bears against the under side of one of the bars b, and thus holds the valve to allow of the discharge of the contents. As soon as the cuspidor is cleaned the rod E is removed.
In using the above-described cuspidor on passenger and street cars the valve might be omitted; and it is also manifest, in using the cuspidor for a dentists box, the CYOSS-b2LTS might be dispensed with.
I am aware that a car-spittoon has been constructed of conical form and having its lower end provided with a spring-held valve; therefore I do not broadly claim such construction.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a cuspidor having an opening at its lower end, of a valve and inclosed spiral springs arranged on opposite sides of said cuspidor, connecting and holding the valve against the opening, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the cuspidor, substantially as described, of a valve held against the lower end thereof by means of spiral springs inclosed in tubes on the opposite sidebf said cuspidor, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a railway-car or the like, of the cuspidor having an opening at its lower end, and a valve held against said ii plate having an outwardly-turned end, sub- 1 stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflixniy signaturein presence of two witnesses.
ORSON I/VHITE SMITH.
