SPITTOON. No. 299,355. Patented Mey 27, 1884.

PHILIP II. mais, or CANAL novae, oIIIo.
SPETTOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,355, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed April 14, 1884. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP II. DEIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canal Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons; and I do deela-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to euspidors intended especially for railway or other coaches, steam boat-cabins, dac.; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a section on line X X, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on line Y Y, Fig. l, the top being removed.
The receptacle A is provided at its upper end with the laterally-extended ledge a, extended entirely around. it. A iiange, a', is projected upward from the outer edge of this flange, as shown. A discharge-opening, B, is formed through the bottom of the receptacle, and a tube, O, is projected upward from around said opening, as shown. This tube is slotted at G from the base of the receptacle upward, so as to permit the saliva to pass from the receptacle into and through the discharge-opening, as shown. A tube, D, is secured and depends from the receptacle and around the discharge-opening. I preferably form this tube D integral with tube C, as shown. A grating, E, is placed on the receptacle, having its rim e rested on the ledge a and within the iiange a', as most clearly shown in Fig. 1. This grating, in practice, is preferably made of cast metal, but may be made of wire-netting when so desired. A tube, F, is secured to the under side of the grating and extends down over tube G, being made of a length so it will project over and close the upper end of said tube and terminate at a point short of the bottom of the receptacle, so as to leave a sufiicient portion of the slots C open to permit the operation of the device, as before indicated.
In practice I intend to have the device embedded in the door of the car or in other suitable position desired. This will be understood from Fig. 3, in which view I have indicated the floor in dotted lines.
Insteadof using the device in connection with a railway-coach or other moving carrier, it may be used in buildings, and the tube D be connected with the sewer.
In operation, it will be seen the saliva will pass out through the slots C into the dischargetube, and wind will not come up through said tube by reason of its closed top.
` Vhile I prefer to use the grating and to support tube F thereby, it is manifest the grating could be dispensed with and the tube D supported by a cross-bar rested at its ends on the ledges a, or in other suitable manner desired. I also prefer to use said tube, and to make it removable from tube C, as shown. It is obvious, however, that said tube C might be closed by a cap secured permanently or otherwise on its upper end, and the operation of the device would be practically the same.
The grating and` tube F can be readily removed when it is desired to cleanse the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
`l. A euspidor provided with a dischargeopening, and a slotted tube projected upward around said opening and closed at its upper end, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described cuspidor having a slotted tube projected upward around its discharge-opening, and a tube slipped over and removable from said slotted tube, and having its lower end held above the lower end of said tube, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the receptacle having dischargeopening, and provided with a slotted tube projected up around said opening, of the grating supported on said receptacle, and provided with a depending tube f1tting over and having its lower end arranged above the base of the slotted tube, s'ubstztn-V l In testimony whereof I mysignatnrein tially as set forth. presence of two Witnesses.v
4. The combination of the receptacle A, I slotted tube projected upward around the PHILIP I-I. DEIS.
discharge-opening thereof, and a tube supported on the receptacle and depending over Witnesses:
and having its end arranged above the base J. H. MITCHELL, of the slotted tube, substantially as set forth. CHRISTIAN DEIS.
