UNITED STATES ATENT Erica.
ALBERT MACK, OF CHICAGO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. QUINN, OF ENGLEWVOOD, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CHAMBERAND SLOP BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 289,011, dated November 27, 1883,
Application filed August 9, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'I, ALBERT G. Mack, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Il1inois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Chamber and Slop Bucket; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same; Fig. 3, a plan view with the cover removed, and Fig. a an inverted plan view of the cover and water-seal.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be used as a slop-bucket when needed, and also, by raising the hinged cover B, to render a seat, which is especially constructed and do signed for the purpose, accessible as a chamher-bucket.
The object of my invention is to furnish a bucket which shall be a convenience in bedrooms, and at the same time be so constructed as to prevent any escape of noxious gases; and to this end my invention consists in constructing said bucket with a cover provided with a water-seal of peculiar construction, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A represents the body of my device, made of any suitable material and preferably of the form shown.
B is a flaring close-fitting cover, which opens upon a hinge, r, and is prevented from being thrown backward beyond a given angle by means of a shoulder or stop, g. This cover has an opening, '0, in its center, provided with a tube, t, projecting downward into a cup, 9, which is soldered to the inner face of the cover B, over the center of the same. This cup is provided with one or more overflow-openings, 0, above the level of the lower end of the tube 25, and has a backward hollow extension, 8, on the same side as the hinge, inclined upward to coincide with the inner face of the cover,
(No mode-Ll as shown. The overflow-openings 0 are on the side of the cup opposite to the hollow extension.
0 is a seat either attached to the inner surface of the body B or not.
From the above construction it will be seen that water poured upon the cover passes into the cup 19 and out through the overflow-openings 0 into the bucket, leaving, however, a sufficient quantity in the cup to extend above the lower end of the tube 25, as indicated in the drawings, and thus to serve as a trap or seal to prevent the escape of any odorfrom the interiorof the bucket.
When the cover is tipped back for the purpose of using the device as a chamber-seat, all the water flows into the hollow extension 8, instead of passing out through the opening n, and upon lowering the cover immediately returns to the cup p. If a detachable instead of a hinged cover is used, the hollow extension may be omitted, if desired.
NVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the body A, the cover hinged to the same, and provided with the water-seal, comprising the tube t and cup p, provided with an overflow, and having the hollow extension 8, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combined slop-bucket and chamberseat herein described, comprising the body A, provided with the seat 0 at its upper end. flaring cover B, with an opening in its center and tightly fitting the said body, tube it, projecting downward from the opening in the center of the cover, and cup 17, secured to the inner face of the cover over the said tube, and provided with the overflow-opening 0 above the level of the lower end of the tube, substantially as described.
ALBERT G. MACK.
In presence of- DOUGLAS DYRENFORTH, ED'WARD McCain-REY.
