Description

yJ. MAGEE. l,Sink-Guard and Cover.
Ne. 212,614. Patented Feb. 25,1879.
NJETERS. PHOYO-LITNUGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D 24 uUNITED STATES PATENT FEICEo JOHN MAGEE, OF CHELSEA, ASSIGNOR TO THE MAGEE FURNACE COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SINK GUARDS AND COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,614, dated February 25, 1879; application filed December 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MAGEE, of Chelsea, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sink Guards and Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- aet description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Y Figure l is a perspective view of a sinktrap with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ofthe same.
My invention relates to improvements in sink guards and covers, for the purpose of preventing refuse and other substances from going down through the sink-pipe, as well as preventing obnoxious gases escaping into the room, as is too frequently the ease with many sinks now in use; and my invention consists in the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I willproceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the outer receptacle, secured at its upper edge to the bottom of the sink; or it may be cast in one piece with the latter, if so desired. The lower end of the receptacle is provided with the outlet a. Resting on a shoulder in the liange of the receptacle is an inner and smaller receptacle, B, provided with discharge-opening b immediately beneath itsiiange b, bymeans of which the water, having risen to the openings, is allowed to escape between the receptacles A and B, and pass out through the outlet a.
On the top oi' the outer receptacle, A, and inclosing the inner receptacle, B, is secured the annular frame C, provided with a flange, c, extending downward a short distance below the discharge-opening b, whereby is formed the water-sealed trap, to prevent the escape of obnoxious gasesfrom the pipes below the sink. The annular frame C is provided with a hinged perforated plate, D, fitting into the opening in the frame, to act as a guard against the admission of the coarser refuse into the pipes. Below this guard, and suspended on a shoul der formed on the inner side ofthe flange c, I place the removable wire strainer or cup E, to catch and hold the refuse which might escape through the perforations in the plate D. This` strainer, being removable, can be readily lifted from the trap for cleaning, without disturbing any of the other parts, simply by raising the hinged plate D.
I am aware that perforated hinged plates are not new. nor are strainers, and therefore I do not claim these features, broadly; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sink-trap constructed as described, and consisting ofthe outer receptacle, A, provided with the outlet a, the inner reccptacle,B, provided with the discharge-openings 11,'tl1e annular frame C, provided with the perforated hinged plate D, and the removable wire cup or strainer E, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN MAGEE.
