GARBAGE-HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR SINKS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be-it known that I, CHARLEY EUGENE 00X, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Holding Attachments for Sinks, of which the following is a specification.

My said attachment is a receptacle applied to the bottom of a slop or kitchen sink and serves to arrest and retain grease and most of the solid substances, while allowing water to pass freely into the wastepipe or drain. The receptacle is provided with a trap, so that foul odors cannot pass upward and pollute the air above or surrounding the sink.

The construction, arrangement, and combination of parts are as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my sink attachment applied to a sink as in -use. Fig.

2 is a plan view of the portion of the attach ment which is fixed to the sink. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the removable garbage holder or receptacle proper.

In Fig. 1, A indicates a kitchen-sink of ordinary construction. My attachment thereto consists of the following parts: a fixed and pendent metal cylinder B, having a top gutter B, a removable cover 0 therefor, a removable garbage holder or receptacle D, supported within said cylinder B, and a removable apertured annular rim E, which surrounds the cylinder-cover' O and forms the top of gutter B.

The gutter or trough B is formedby a lateral enlargement of. the top of the cylinder. Such enlargement has a lateral flange b,which is bolted'to the bottom of the sink A and surrounds an opening in the latter; The apertured annular rim- E is supported on said flange b and slopes downward to the cover 0, whose lateral flange c overlaps its inner edge, as shown. The cover 0 fits over the top of cylinder B and has a central depression, in which is secured an eyebolt c for use in detaching the cover.

The basket-like hopper or garbage-receptacle D is constructed of woven wire in its lower portion and of imperforate sheet metal in its upper portion. (See Fig. 3.) Itis made so much smaller than the cylinder B that a considerable space exists between it and the side wall of the latter. bottom loop (I, that rests upon a horizontal perforated partition 6 arranged on the conical lower portion of the cylinder B. It is circular in cross-section, save at the point adjacent to the trap B, where it is made flat, as at d, (see Fig. 3,) and provided with a wovenwire rim (1 that projects laterally over the flange b of the trap B and serves as a garbage-screen.

The garbage receptacle or holder D has a handle or bail d whose straight side arms are adapted to slide vertically in loops at, arranged on the inner side of the receptacle D. The handle 61 is pushed down, as shown in Fig. 1, when not in use or drawn up, as shown in Fig. 3, when the holder D is to be removed,

It will be seen that water passes from the sink proper through the apertured rim E into the gutter B, whence it escapes through screen (1 into the garbage holder D and through the latter into the cylinder B, and thence to a waste-pipe,(not shown,) which isin practice attached to the conical lower end of the cylinder. The coarser particles of solid substances floating in the water are arrested by the rim E and the finer pass through it into the gutter B, along with grease, and What is not arrested and retained in the latter passes through the screen d into holder D. Whenever desired, solid substances constituting waste products or garbage may be deposited in holder D by raising the cover 0, which is effected by means of a suitable hook applied to the eyebolt c.

When it is required to empty the garbageholder D, the cover C is first lifted and removed, when the former may be raised vertieally by means of its slidable bail or handle (1. In turning out the contents of the holder D the bottom loop (1 serves as a convenient handle.

Coarse particles may be removed from the gutter B by first raising the rim E; but this operation requires that the cover 0 shall have been previously lifted.

hat I claim is-- 1. The combination, with a sink having an opening as described, of a fixed cylinder pendent therefrom, and having a gutter at the top which is provided with a trapped discharge-opening on the inner side, and the reticulated garbage-holder arranged in said cylinder and having a lateral screen which overlaps the said trap, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a sink having an opening as described, and a cylinder fixed to and pendent therefrom, of a removable cover for the cylider, a removable reticulated garbage-holder, arranged in the cylinder, and

provided with a handle adapted to slide ver tieally in loops attached to the side of said holder, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combinatiomwith the sink having an opening as described, and a pendent cylinder fixed thereto, and having a gutter, and a re movable cover provided with a lateral flange, of an annular apertured rim overlying the gutter and engaging beneath the said flange, as shown and described.

4. The combination,with the sink having an opening, and the cylinder, fixed to and pendent from the sink as described, and having a reticulated horizontal partition, of the removable reticulated garbage-holder, having a bottom projection resting upon said partition,

whereby the holder is supported as shown 40 and described.
