TEMPORARY BINDER. No. 319,660, Patent ed June 9, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. ALVORD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
1b aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ALVORD, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Temporary Binder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and readily-operated temperary binder for magazines, books of reference, &c.; and it consists of a hollow body or back carrying book-covers of the usual form, and containing two hooksone movable and the other fixedfor engaging the leaves of the book, the movable hook being drawn toward the fixed hook by means of a spring, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of the back of my improved binder, and Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal and cross-sectional elevations, respectively, of the same, showing it applied.
The back or body A of the binder is preferably formed of a half-round bar of wood having a longitudinal groove, B, along the middle, reaching nearly to the ends thereof. A hook, 0, .formed of a wire bent at right angles, forming two arms, a b, is inserted in one end of the body A, projecting into the groove 13, and it is bent to form a hook, c, for receiving an elastic rubber band, d.
The arm Z) of the hook O extends over the inner surface of the body A, parallel with and a short distance from it, and its extremity is turned outward to facilitate the entrance of the leaves of the book under the arm I). The book 0, similar in form to the hook O, is inserted in the opposite end of the body A, and is provided with an elongated arm, a, and a hook, I), whioh'is similar in form and size to the hook I). The arm a is provided with a hook, c, for engaging the opposite end of the rubber band d. The hook O is held in its place in the binder by bending the inner end to bear against the wood, and is further secured by a staple, E, driven into the end of the body A.
The covers D are secured to the body A by means of the usual flexible connections.
The volume to be inserted in the binder is opened in the middle, and the back is inserted under the fixed hook. The movable hook is then drawn out sufficiently to allow the hook to be placed in its position in the binder, when the movable hook is allowed to return to its normal position and engage the back of the book, as shown in Fig. 2.
My improved binder is applicable to books of reference and periodicals with flexible covers, such as railway-guides, post-office guides, the Patent Office Gazette, See.
It is also intended that this binder be made in such form as to admit of its holding more than one volume, in which case there would be a series of hooks in the wooden body arranged parallel, one or both of which in each set would be movable. In this form it would be partieularlyeonvenient as a binder for several copies of magazines.
The binder may be converted into a newspaper-file by lengthening one or both of the hooks. In the present case I have shown one stationary and one movable hook 5 but I may in some instances employ two movable hooks.
By preference I employ a rubber band to draw the movable hook into its normal position; but, if desired, a wire spring may be used for the same purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described temporary binder, consisting of the rigid back A, having a longitudinal groove, B, the books 0 0, having arms a a b b, the arms a a, projecting into the groove of the back, and the armsb b extending over the inner surface of the back, and the spring d, connecting the arms a a of the hooks, as set forth.
GEORGE E. ALVORD.
