UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS HOOKETT, OF WILMINGTON, OHIO.
BOOK AND COPY HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,682, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed March 9, 1885. Serial No. 158,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, AMos HooKErr,of Wilmington, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Book and Copy Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the separate parts; Fig. 8, a plan view showing my invention applied upon a book.
The object of this invention is to furnish a simple and convenient means for holding open the pages of bound books for copying and reference purposes, and also for holdingin place the copy that is to be transcribed upon the pages of the book.
The invention consists of a longitudinal rod adapted for attachment to the book, and a holder arranged to slide'on the rod; also in certain novel details in the construction of said parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
A is a longitudinal tubular rod provided at one end with a suitable hook, a, adapted to engage the leaves or back binding of a book, and at the opposite end provided with a sliding hook, a, the shank of which A fits within and slides upon the part A. The said parts when combined form the longitudinally-adjustable hooked rod A, which may be attached to a book, E, by engaging the hooks a a with the leaves or binding, as shown in Fig. 3.
Bisaholder, composed of one or more wires, to which is suitably attached a thimble or eye, 0, adapted to fit and slide upon the exterior of rod A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
When in use upon a book, the holder B and hooked rod A are intended to stand at right angles to each other,as shown in Figsl and 3.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The hooked rod A, carrying the holder B, is secured centrally between the leaves of the open page of the book by moving the part A within the part A, and thus adjusting the hooks a a upon the back binding of the book. Holder B extends across and presses upon the faces of the leaves of the book and keeps the book open, as shown. The holder B may be shifted up or down on rod A, as desired, and copy or manuscript to be copied may be held in convenient position by passing the same under the copy-holder B, between it and the face of the book-page.
My improvement forms a convenient and easily-applied book and copy holder, whereby the copying of documents and access to the book is greatly facilitated.
I do not limit myself to the exact size or form of any of the parts herein shown,as they may be suitably varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a book and copy holder made substantially as herein shown and described, the same consisting of a central hooked rod adjustable in its length and a holder sliding upon said hooked rod at rightangles thereto,as set forth.
2. In a book and copy holder, the rod A, constructed, as shown and described, with a hook, a, at one end, and having at the opposite end a sliding hook,a, the shank of which, A, slides upon the rod A, whereby said rod may carry a holder, B, and both holder and rod may be adjusted and attached to the books, as set forth.
3. The rod A, having a hook at one end and a sliding hook, at, at the opposite end, in combination with the holder B, sliding upon the rod A, substantially as herein shown and described.
AMOS HOCKETT.
