PACKET-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Application filed April 9, 1917. Serial No. 160,723.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Dale, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packet- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in packet holders and has for its dominant object, to provide a novel holder for use by mail men and the like adapted to receive and maintain letters when assorted in a packet against accidental displacement and yet, permit the same to be easily and instantlv removed when desired.
It is also an object of the invention to provide the holder with spring clamping means for securing the letters in form of a packet and allowing the removal thereof without tearing or mutilating the same.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved holder; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views. there is provided a receptacle 1. substantially rectangular in shape and having the forward extremity thereof open. A pair of spaced vertically disposed channel members 2 are secured to the closed end wall of the receptacle and serve as means for slidably receiving the packet or other clamping means therein.
Spring clamping members comprising lengths of spring wire 3 are provided and are coiled intermediate their ends at 4 and conform with depending leg portions 5, which leg portions are slidably received in the vertically disposed channels 2. The free extremities of the clamping members 3 are bent downwardly to provide arms 6 while the other arms 7 are secured thereto in proximity of the point of bending and are of a length corresponding to the said arm 6. Bearing pintles are formed upon the lower extremities of the arms 6 and 7 and loosely receive therebetween rolls 8, which rolls are adapted to be engaged with the letters or other matter as arranged within the receptacle 1. e
It will be understood. that in placing letters within the receptacle 1, the arms 6 and 7 are forced upwardly to cause bending of the horizontal portions of the lengths of wire 3, thus, binding the leg portions 5 thereof within their respective channels 2 and preventing undue sliding movement of the same. WVhen it is desired to place any number of letters within the receptacle 1, the legs 5 may be set upwardly within their channels to accord with the depth of the same and to cause the yieldable engagement of the rolls 8 carried by the arms 6 and 7 therewith. Obviously, by providing the rolls 8, any of the letters as may be desired can be easily and instantly removed from the receptacle without danger of tearing or mutilating the same in any way. However, due to the constant engagement of the spring clamping means therewith, they will be normally maintained in compact form.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims. I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
l. A packet holder, including a receptacle. spring clamping arms having downwardly bent legs removahly engaged with one wall of said receptacle, and rolls arranged upon the free extremities of the clamping arms.
2. A packet holder, including a receptacle having an open end and a pluralitv of sockets secured to one wall thereof. spring clamping arms having downwardlv bent legs slidably engaged with said sockets. and rolls arranged upon the free extremities of the clamping arms.
5 bers comprising lengths of wire coil-ed and bent downwardly to provide legs and clamping arms, said legs being slidably engaged with the sockets, and rolls arranged upon the free extremities of thearnis and projecting into the receptacle. 10
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
WILLIAM L. MORRIS.
