CHARLES A. FOSS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS'.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratenteaoct. 1,1912.
Application filed March 11, 1912. Serial No. 682,913.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Foss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, countyl of` Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.y
My invention relates to improvements in candle holders, and has for its object theprovision of a device of this character which is of simple construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of part-s hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understoodby reference to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa candle holder embodying my invention and shown as applied to the trunk of a Christmas tree, Fig. 2, a top plan view of the holder, and Fig. 3, a detail section of the candle support. The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in Fig. 1, comprises a shallow sheet metal bowl 1 having aslot 2 extending through the bottom thereof and adapted to receive a supporting bar or strip 3, as shown. A candle receiving socket 4 is formed of a single strip of sheet metalbent to form the socket 4 and also spring clamping jaws 5 on the bottom of said socket, the sides 6 of said socket being adapted to serve as operating means for opening clamping jaws 5 to receive bar 3, as indicated. By this arrangement it will be observed that the bowl 1 may be placed over bar 3 at any x desired point and socket member 4 secured to said bar within said bowl by compressing sides 6 to open jaws 5 and releasing said sides when said jaws have been placed over A. said bar. Then the candle 'Z is placed in socket 4, sides 6 `are held in separated positions and thus lock jaws 5 on bar 4.
A substantially U-shapedv clamp 8 is formed of a single sheet of sheet metal bent into U-form, the ends of the limbs thereof being spread apart and provided with teeth 9 adapted to engage the trunk 10 of a Christmas tree. A wire loop 11 slidably engages over clamp 8 and teeth 12 are provided in the upper edges of the limbs of said clamp to engage said loop and lock the saine in operative position. By this arrangement it will be observed that by sliding loop 11 on clamp member 8y towardl the tree trunk, the ends of the limbsl of said clamp member will be. forced toward each other and teeth 9 fo-rced into trunk 10 of the Christmas tree.
`Apointed brace 13 is hinged" to the outer end of clamp 8 and is adapted to haveits point inserted in the tree trunk to serveas a brace. At one side near its outer. end, clamp member 8 is bent outwardly, as indicated atS, and a slot 14 is provided "in said outwardly bent portion adapted to permit vthe'passage of the laterally bent portion 3 i of. bar `3,the outer end of clamp 8 being also i provided with a slot 14 to. permit the passage yof barB.` By this arrangement it Iwill j be observed that the supporting bar 3 may lbe readily placed in adjusted positions in clamp 8 by inserting the same through slots 14 and 1,4', and that the inner end of said bar will pass the tree trunk 10 in case it is desired to adjust the bar to a position in which such passage is necessary.
The construction above described may be readily taken apart and assembled for use,
and will be found to be strong and durable and highly efficient.
WhileI have illustrated and describedthe Ipreferred forms of construction for carry-` ing my invention ,into eect, thesev are ca- T pable ofy variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the lexact'details of construct-ion set forth, but
l the appended claims.
desire to' avail myself of such variations and modifications j. as come within the scope, of
. Having described my invention, whatA I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent-, is
1. A candle holder comprising a bowl 'having a slot passing `through the bottom p thereof; a supporting member passing through said slot; a candle support-detachlably secured to said member within said bowl; and means for supporting said supporting member, substantially as described.
2. A candle holder comprising a bowl having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a supporting member removably inserted in said slot; a candle supportdetachably secured to said member within said bowl; and means for supporting said sup-r porting member, substantially as described.
3. A. candle holder comprising a bowl having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a supporting member slidable in said slot, a-candle support detachably secured to said member within said bowl and the means for supporting said supporting member, substantially as described.
Il. A candle holder comprising a bowl having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a supporting member passing through said slot; a candle support detachably secured to said member within said bowl, said candle support consisting of a single'sheet of sheet metal bent to form a candle receiving socket and a spring clamp under said socket; and means for supporting said supporting member, substantially as described.
5. A candle holder comprising a bowl having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a support-ing member passing through said slot; a candle support detachably secured to said member within said bowl; a substantially U-shaped sheet metal clamping member having teeth at the ends of its limbs adapted to engage a tree trunk, there being slots in said clamping member adapted to receive and support said supporting member; means for binding said clamping member in operative position; and
- a pointed brace hinged to the outer end o-f said clamping member and adapted to engage a tree trunk, substant-ially as described. 6. A candle holder comprising a bowl y having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a supporting member passing through said slot; a candle support detachably secured to said member within said bowl, said candle support consisting of a single sheet of sheet metal bent to form a candle receiving socket and a spring clamp under said socket; a substantially U-shaped sheet metal clamping member having teeth at the ends of its limbs adapted to engage a tree trunk, there being slots in said clamping member adapted to receive and support said supporting member; means for binding said clamping member in operative position; and a pointed brace hinged to the outer end of said clamping member and Y adapted to engage a tree trunk, substantially as describe 7. AA candle holder comprising a bowl p having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a supporting member passing through said slot; a candle support detachably secured to said member within said bowl; a substantially U-shaped sheet metal clamping member having teeth at the ends of its limbs adapted to engage a tree trunk, there being slots in said clamping member adapted to receive and support said supporting member; a loop slidably embracing said clamping member, there being teeth in the edges of said clamping member adapted to engage said loop; and a pointed brace hinged to the outer end of said clamping member and adapted to engage a tree trunk, substantially as described.
8. A candle holder comprising a bowl having a slot passing through the bottom thereof; a supporting member passing through said slot; a candle support detachably secured to said member within said bowl, said candle support consisting of a single sheet of sheet metal bent to form a candle receiving socket and a spring clamp under said socket; a substantially U-shaped sheet metal clamping member having teeth at the ends of its limbs adapted to engage a tree trunk, there being slots in said clamping member adapted to receive and support said supporting member; a loop slidably embracing said clamping member, there being teeth in the edges of said clamping member adapted to engage said loop; and a pointed brace hinged to t-he outer end of said clamping member and adapted to engage a tree trunk; substantially as described.
9. A clamping member comprising a substantially U-shaped sheet metal clamp having teeth at the ends of its limbs adapted to engage a tree trunk; a loop slidably embracing said clamp, there being teeth in the edges of said clamp adapted to engage said loop; and a po-inted brace hinged to the outer end of said clamp and adapted to engage a tree trunk', substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
