H. SOHLUETER -& O. KUCH. GHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT AND CANDLE HOLDER.
No. 414.871. Patented Now 12,1889.
WITIVEVSSES: lA/VE/VTORS BY 9 I v/ A n/MW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH SOHLUETER AND OTTO KUCH, OF STAPLETQN, NEIV YORK;
CHRISTMAS-TREE ORNAMENT AND CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,871, dated November 12, 1889.
- Application filed January 8, 1889- Serial No. 295,731. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it kn own that we, HEINRICH SOHLUIgTna and OTTO KUCH, of Stapleton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, citizens ofthe United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle- Ilolders, of which the following is a specificaour invention is to provide a new andiinproved combined candle-holder which is simple in construction and which can be heldfirmly on any branch or twig, either straight, curved, or inclined up or down, and which holder at all times holds the candle in the vertical position.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of our improved combined Christmas-tree ornament and candle-holder on the line a as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal sectional view of the same on the line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our improved holder is composed of two plates A and B, of any desired shape, the same preferably being made in the shape of leaves or flowers, which plates are each provided with two hinge-lugs 0, through which a pivot D is passed for pivoting the two plates together. A spiral spring E surrounds said pivot, one end E of said spring resting against the inner surface of the upper part of one plate A and the other end E being carried upward and resting on the inner surface of the upper part of the other plate B. Said part E is bent to form a projection F, extending beyond the side edge of that plate B against which the part E rests, and adjacent to said projection the wire is bent to form a semicircular or segmental clamp G; The end parts of-the wire forming the spiral spring E bear against the inner surfaces of the upper parts of the plates A B, press the upper parts of said plates from each other, thereby pressing the lower ends of the plates against the twig or branch 0 between them. The combined. ornament and holder is thus held securely on the twig or branch. By means of the projection F the loop G is pressed from the inner surface of that plate B against which it rests, and the lower end of the candle N is inserted between the inner surface of said plate and the clamp G, the plates having interior pockets M for receiving the lower end of .the candle. Said clamp is pressed against the candle, and in turn presses the candle against the inner surface of said plate or pocket therein, whereby said candle is held securely. The same spring thus serves for holding the holder on the twig or branch, and also holds the candle in the holder.
The dotted lines in Fig. 1 represent the different positions of the twigs or branches in relation to the holderthat is, whether the branches are straight or inclined up or down, the holder can always be held vertically on the same.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A candle-holder composed ofv two plates hinged to each other, a spring which serves to clamp the holder on an object, one end of the spring forming a candle-clamp, which clamp is pressed by the spring against the inner surface of one of the plates, substantially as set forth.
2. In a candle-holder, the combination, with two plates pivoted to each other, of-a spiral spring surrounding thepivot, the ends of said spring bearing-against the plates and pressing the lower ends of the plates toward each other, one end of said spring being bent to form a projection extending beyond the side edge of one plate and having a loop-shaped clamping end, which is pressed against the inner surface of one of said plates and serves 9
