Description

(No Model.)
A. L. CLARK. LANTERN.
No. 585,555. Patented June 29, 1897.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED L. CLARK, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,555, dated June 29, 1897. Application filed August 10, 1896. Serial No. 602,360. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Dubuque, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it Figure 1 shows a perspective of the complete lantern; Fig. 2, a perspective of the stand and handle attached with globe removed. Fig. 3 shows the under side of the candle-stand.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base of the candle stick or stand. This stand is preferably stamped out of thin metal with a rim a formed around its outer edge. In the center of this stand A is a candle socket or holder 1) for holding a candle d. Through the base A are two holes 6, through which the ends of the wire handle B are passed andsecured to the under side of the base by bending them against the bottom and soldering them thereto, as shown in Fig. 3.
The handle B is made of spring-wire and so bent that it shall conform very nearly to the contour of the inside of the globe or chimney D, which surrounds it, and should press outwardly against parts of the globe, as at g, for the purpose of firmly holding the chimney on its stand.
The chimney or globe D is of transparent material and may be of any well-known make with an opening at both ends, but of whatever shape the chimney may be upon its inner side the spring-handle should be adapted to come in contact with the chimney for the purpose of retaining the chimney firmly upon the stand.
For the purpose of guarding the chimney or globe from injury there are secured two or more wires h to the stand A, which project upwardly to about the middle of the globe D, to the upper end of which is attached a guard K, which extends around the globe to protect the same. Beneath the stand A maybe secured a socket 41, into which a pole may be inserted for carrying the lantern whenever it is desired to use the lantern as a torch, and when thus used the upper end of the handle may be used to attach light decorations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A base having a socket uponits under side to receive a pole, and a socket upon its top to receive a candle, combined with a chimney, and spring wires which extend up through the chimney and impinge against its inner sides at both top and bottom and thus hold the chimney securely in position, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lantern, an ilnperforate base, and a chimney placed thereon and forming a tight joint therewith, combined with two bent springs which conform to the internal shape of the chimney and extend up through it; both springs being so shaped as to bear against the inner side of the chimney at both top and bottom, and thus force it downwardly against the base, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ALFRED L. CLARK.
