A. STELZNER.
CANDLE HOLDER. No. 422,989. Patented Mar. 11, 1890.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED STELZNER, OF IVIESBADEN, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,989, dated March 11, 1890.
Application filed July 25, 1889. Serial No. 318,701 (No model.) i I T0 at whom it may concern.-
7 Be itknown that I, ALFRED STELZNER, a subj ect of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Wiesbaden, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candled-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved candle holder to be mounted in the hollow top or socket of a candlestick and serving to securely grasp and support candles of varying dianr eter.
The candles generally sold rarely fit exactly into the candlestick or its socket. To make them fit, a strip of paper is usually wound around the lower end of the candle, or the latter is scraped at its lower end to make it thinner. The improved candle-holder of my invention will firmly support candles of different diameters.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a candle, mounted in the candle-holder and fitted into the candlestick. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the improved candle-holder. Fig. 3 is a side View, and Fig. 4 a plan, of the same.
The candle-holder forms a shell or. short tube, slightly tapering toward its lower end and preferably stamped of sheet metal, steel, or hard metal, or it may be castof a suitable composition of metals. From the tapering body of the shell or tube three elastic tongues A are stamped, the base of which extends from the rounded-off upper part B of the shell. The threetongues are distanced among each other by one hundred and twenty degrees of the circle, and they freely extend down nearly to the lower annular part 0 of the shell, being bent outward to bear against the inside of the socket, when the shell is forced down into the same, whereby the said tongues are compressed and forced toward the candle. Between the said three tongues A three other elastic tongues D are equally stamped from the metal of the shell. Their base extends from the lower annular part 0 of the shell, and they extend freely upward to about the middle of the upper part B of the shell. The tongues D are bent inside the shell in such a manner as to grasp the candle when forced down between the said tongues.
By this means the candle is concentrically held and supported within the shell by the three elastic tongues D, while the shell itself is elastically held within the socket of the candlestick by the tongues A.
The shell or candle-holder accordingly has six elastic tongues-three to adjust themselves within the socket of the candlestick and three to grasp and support the candle. The tongues may conveniently be bent or shaped to better adaptthemselves to the surfaces against which they are made to work.
In providing shells of this kind in differ cut-say six sizes candles of any diameter may be adapted to'candlesticks of any size of socket.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- A candle-holder consisting of a shell having th'ree elastic tongues D, forming part with the lower annular portion 0 of the shell and grasping the candle within the shell, and having three elastic tongues A, forming part with the upper portion B of the shell and adj usting the shell within the socket of the candlestick, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of July, 1889.
ALFRED STELZNElR. \Vitnesses:
