SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,883, dated July 30, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, \VrLLIAM I-LWVILDER and HARLAN P. WILDER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Garderence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists of a holder for a match, made of heavy wire coiled to form a rigid socket, which will hold the match securely against lateral movement, in order that the match may be first inserted in position and then ignited by frictional contact against a suitable surface. The rigid coiledwire socket is formed with the front end and interior entirely open and free for the re ception of the match, and the coils are so made that the match will be engaged by several of them at different points along its length to insure the firm holding thereof. The socket 'is used in combination with a long handle, which enables the user to apply the light to combustible material located in positions not conveniently accessible to the handsuch, for instance, as the rear part of the fire-chamber in ordinary stoves or the wicks in oil-stoves.

Our invention also includes the formation of the holding-socket of wire coils of different sizes to make a tapering, reduced, or coneshaped socket, to adapt the same for the reception of large and small matches with equally good results, the base of the cone be ing to the front.

Further, the invention includes the combination, with this tapering, reduced, or coneshaped socket made of wire coils, of a continuation thereof to form the handle.

I11 the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the holder with the match in place. Fig. '2 is a detail sectional view of the socket, illustrating its holding action upon the match.

In the drawings, A is the socket, and B the handle. The socket is formed of heavy wire, which is coiled spirally in any suitable manner, the rear end being of smaller diameter than the front end l, while the intermediate coils are successively of smaller diameter, thus producing a socket composed of wire coils, leaving an unobstructed front end or mouth and a free interior, into which the match may be easily inserted, the general form of which is tapering from the front or open end. This tapering is gradual, and the coil finally runs out in a straight portion, which, being continued, forms the handle.

The wire is sufficiently thick to make the socket rigid in order to resist lateral movement of the match when it is struck, and by turning the match in the socket the rigid coils will act on the wood thereof as a screwthread, indenting it, so that it will be caused to move toward the small end as it is turned, and will be held firmly by several of the coils engaging said indentations at different points. This holding action is illustrated in Fig. 2.

WVhile I have shown a closely-coiled socket, it will be understood that the coils may be separated slightly, and a difference in the action may be pointed out as resulting from this, inasmuch as the match may be properly positioned in the socket by turning it a slighter amount. The end of the handle may be turned into a hook or ring for hanging the article up.

e claim as our invention 1. A ma ch-holder consisting of a handle and a socket at the end thereof formed of a coiled wire reduced or tapered from the front end, said end being open and free for receiving the match, substantially as described.

2. A holder for a match or the like, consisting of a socket of coil-wire which is tapered or reduced from the enlarged open front end, the wire at the narrow end of the coil being continued to form a handle, substantially as described.
