ALDES H. OADVVALLADER AND EUGENE P. OAROLAN, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS; SAID OADWALLADER ASSIGNOR TO SAID OAROLAN.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,188, dated October 25, 1898.
Application led February l2, 1898. Serial No. 670,122. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALDES H. CADWAL- LADER and EUGENE P. CAEOLAN, of San Antonic, in the county of Bexar, State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a complete specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of our invention is to produce a simple, durable, and inexpensive lantern.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure Iris a side elevation of our lantern complete. Fig. II is a perspective view of the same with the globe or chimney removed. Fig. III is a bottom plan view of the lantern with part of the same cut away.
Referring to the gures on the drawings, 1 indicates the base of our lantern, which consists, preferably, of a sheet of metal-for example, tin.
2 indicates one of the frame side pieces, and 3 the other. The parts 2 and 3 are preferably made of wire and are respectively bent at right angles and in opposite directions, as indicated at 4. The part 5 of each of the frame side pieces forms a semicircle and each semicircle terminates in a loop 7, each loop encircling its companion frame-piece at a point adjacent to the bend 4 thereof. The diameter of the circle composed of the two semicircular Wires 5 is a little less than that of the base 1, and the base is united to those parts as by turning or crimping its edge around the semicircular portions 5 of the wire frame-pieces. At their upper ends, respectively, the side frame-pieces are provided with loops 8, by which means they are united to one end of spiral springs 9, respectively, which at their other ends, respectively, are united to similar loops 10 of a chimney or globe retaining member 1l. The chimney l2 maybe an ordinary lamp-chimney, provided at its upper end with a scalloped edge 13, with which the retaining member 1l engages, so that under the tension of the springs 9 the chimney is securely confined between the base and the retaining member 11.
15 indicates a bail secured, preferably, to the opposite corners of the retaining member l1.
16 indicates a socket-piece made of sheet metal and provided with integral radial extensions 17, Whose upturned ends 18 aord means for holding the chimney securely to the base. The radial extensions are secured to the base, as by means of rivets I9. The socket-piece and extensions 17 are formed from a single piece of sheet metal. The socket-piece is afterward bent into a cylindrical form and the extensions are bent into required shape. The cylindrical form of the socket-piece is preserved without the employment of solder by the securing of the extensions 17 to the base in the manner described.
Heretofore in lanterns of this description there has been difficulty in constructing at small expense a durable socket and base. The construction specified dispenses with the necessity of the use of solder or other fusible material and renders the lantern at the same time serviceable and unaffected by heat.
In practice of course the socket may be adapted to contain a wick and suitable illuminating-oil, preferably that presented in the form of an ordinary candle.
l. In alantern, the combination with frame side pieces bent at right angles, respectively, as indicated at 4, and provided with semicircular extensions, to the extremity of each of which is united its companion piece at its bend 4 to constitute a complete circle, a circular base secured to the united semicircular pieces, and chimney-retainin g mechanism operatively united with the side frame-pieces, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lantern, the combination with its base, of a cylindrical socket formed of sheet metal and provided with radial extensions secured to the base, and upturned chimney-retaining ends upon the radial extensions, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of all which we have hereunto subscribed our names.
ALDES I-I. OADWALLADER. EUGENE P. CAROLAN.
