IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,162, dated July 22, 1873; application filed June 10, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL NAYLOR, of Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and tothelettersofreference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lantern in which an ordinary kerosene-lamp chimney is used, and which is adapted to be lighted either with candle or oil, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my lantern, and Figs. 2 and 3 show the means for lighting the lamp. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show detached parts of the lantern.

A represents the base of the lantern, and B the top. (J represents the metallic framework which connects the base A and top B, allthese parts being constructed in such form and shape that the ordinary kerosene-lamp chimney may be used in the lantern. h h represent springs bent in U shape, and which are pivoted or secured at right angles to each other on the under side, and to top B. The lower ends of these springs are bent outward so as to admit the chimney being easily. in-

serted between them. D represents the lampv to be used in the lantern when desired to light the same with oil, said lamp having on opposite sides two lugs, 11 a, which, when the lamp is inserted from the bottom in the base A and turned around, are caught by two flanges, b b, soldered on the under side of the base, thus supporting and holding the lamp in place. d d are ears or projections on the side of the lamp, by means of which it is readily removed and inserted in place. On top of the lamp D is a spring-wire frame, j, which, in connection with a wire-spring, e, on the base A, supports the chimney, the upper end of the same being held, by means of springs h h, within the top B of the lantern. By means of these springfastenings the chimney can readily be removed and replaced at any time when desired.

In place of oil the lamp may be lighted by a candle, for which purpose I use a cup, E, with central tube G for the candle, said cup being provided with lugs and projections, the same as described for the lamp D. H represents the bail attached to the cap B of the as described, in combination with wire frame f and spring 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
