UNITED STATES DAVID BOUBLAND, OF MADISONVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLESTICKS.
Specification formirgpart of Letters Patent No. 148,106, dated March 3, 1874,' application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID BOURLAND, of Madisonville, in the county of Hopkins and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candlesticks, ot' which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved Candlestick, and Fig. 2 is a top view ct' the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate correA spondingparts.
My invention has for its object t-o furnish an improved Candlestick, which shall be s0 constructed as t0 hold the candle securely until it is entirely consumed, and which entirely prevents the ditiiculty arising from the lower end of the candle sticking fast in the socket ot' the candlestick, so that it cannot be raised b v the pusher.
The invention consists iu the combination of the pivoted clamps and their spring or springs with the pedestal or post of the can-v dlestick, closed at theupper end, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the base or saucer of the candlestick, which is lnade in the ordinary form or manner, and has a pedestal or post, B, attached toits center, in the ordinary way. The upper end ot" the post B is closed, and toit are pivoted two semi-tubular clamps or levers, C, the upper ends of which project beyond the top of the pedestal B, and which may have semicircular flan ges or shelves, c', formed upon their inner or concave sides, just above the top of' the post or pedestal B, for the lower end ot' the candle to rest upon. The lower ends ot' the semi-tubular clamps C extend nearly to the base or bottom A ot' the candlestick. D are springs attached to the upper part of the post B, and pressing the lower ends ofthe clamps C outward, so as to clamp the candle between the upper ends and hold it securely. The springs D may be made in one piece, and in V shape, and may be passed through and secured in a hole in the upper end ot' post B. I1" desired, one of the clamps G may be stationary, and the other pivoted and provided with a spring; but I prefer the construction rst described, as holding the candle more erect.
In using the Candlestick, the upper ends of the clamps C are forced apart, t'or inserting and removing the candle, by pressing the lower ends of said clamps inward with the thumb and iinger.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatentl In combination with the base A and pedestal B, the semi-cylindrical pivoted clamps C C, provided with internal supports or ledges C C', and with an interposed spring or springs, D, the various parts being constructed and relatively combined as set forth and. shown. `DAVID BOURLAND.
