APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 9. 19x4.

V s a BARREL-LID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. as, 1915.
Application filed. September 9, 1914. Serial No. 860,866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reed, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Lids; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to barrel lids, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a barrel lid which will always catch and hold on the chime of the barrel when the lid is thrown back out of the way to give access to the contents of the barrel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a barrel cover in which a gravity catch is secured on the underside of the cover, so that when the cover is thrown back out of the way, the gravity catch will engage the chime of the barrel and hold the lid in position to give access to the contents of the barrel. 1
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of theconstruction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the upper portion of a barrel and showing the barrel lid in place thereon, Fig. 2 is a similar View in which the barrel lid is shown thrown back and supported upon the chime of the barrel by the catch, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the attaching plate for the catch, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view through said 1 attaching plate and showing the latch head connected thereto. A
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a barrel of the usual or any suitable shape or kind, the chime 2 of which may be plain and flat or may be chamfered. The lid'3 is preferably circular in form and of sufiicient diameter to extend slightly be yond the top of the barrel. Secured underneath the lid 3 is an attaching plate 4: having a socket or bulging portion 5 provided with an aperture 6 through which'the catch 7 extends. The plate 4 is provided with bolt holes 8 and screws 9 extend through said holes into the underside of the cover 3.
The catch 7 is provided with a head 10 which is seated in the socket or bulging portlon 5 and the shank of the catch is adapted to turn in the aperture 6. The catch is provided with a bend 11 and an inclined mem ber 12 which terminates in a screw threaded portion 18 to receive a ball or weight 1 1-.
The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows: When the lid is on the top of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to gain access to the contents of the barrel for any purpose, the lid is lifted at any point within the circumference and the weight let will drop to a position to compel the shank portion 7 to engage the chime of the barrel and hold the lid suspended as shown in Fig. 2. The cover may be drawn back in place at any timeand the catch will always engage the chime of the barrel when the cover is thrown back from any position relatively to the circumference of the cover or barrel.
Various changesmay be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. A barrel cover having upon its underside a gravity catch swiveled within a plate connected to the underside of the lid, said catch having a bent portion, an inclined shank, a weight connected to said shank and adapted to swingthe catch to engage the chime of a barrel when the lid is thrown back from any point around its. periphery.
2. A barrel lid catch comprising a securing plate having a recess therein, a catch having a head mounted in the recess in said plate, said catch having a bend, an inclined member and a weight at the free end thereof.
In. testimony whereof I tfilX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
