ALLEN Hrr'r, or GUs'rINE, TEXAS.
CONDIIVIENT-HOLDER. j
To'ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALLEN Hrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gustine, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condiment-I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to condiment holders, and has particular reference to salt cellars, or the like, having in view the provision of an agitator of peculiar construction and operating means and also to improve generally the construction of the holder as will be hereinafter fully set forth, reference being had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a condiment holder complete. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the closure cup `.hereinafter referred to.
Throughout the following description and on the figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
The body or barrel 10 of the holder may be of any suitable form throughout its main portion, herein shown as cylindrical, and is provided preferably with an integral top 11 having the usual sifting perforations 11. Said top, however, may be secured to the barrel in any desired manner. The lower end of the barrel is outwardly flared at 10, which serves a dual purpose,-to provide a wide base for the holder and also to constitute a sort of funnel for the purpose of filling the barrel. The barrel is provided with securing means of any suitable nature, shown as screw threads 12 upon its inside and preferably just adjacent and above the flared portion thereof. The construction of the barrel just described adapts it readily for decoration if made of china, but it may be constructed of any other suitable material.
A closure for the barrel is provided in the nature of a cup 13, consisting of a disk 13', having a central hole 13a, and having an integral flange 13". The flange is provided with securing means complemental to the barrel securing means, and indicated as screw threads 13. The barrel is closed by turning the closure into the same after being filled. Any suitable means may be pro- Specication of Letters Patenti Application filed August 1,7, 1909.

vided for turning the closure into and out of the barrel. The means indicated consists of a finger piece 14 having one or more proj ections 14 to coperate with notches or recesses 14 in the closure disk. It will be understood, however, that the projections and recesses may be reversed if desired.
When the holder is to be used for salt it is `desirable that there be provided within the barrel an agitator whereby clogging of the salt may be prevented or obviated. A suitable form of agitator consists of a disk 15 to which are connected a plurality of ngers 16 extending upwardly therefrom toward the top 11 to any desired distance, and the disk is furthermore provided with a hub 15 extending downwardly through the hole 13a, in which it has bearing. The lower end of the hub is preferably squared and upon which is fitted the finger piece 14. The construction is such that the nger piece may i slide vertically a slight distance on the hub, but is prevented from rotation thereon. vA fastening screw-or bolt 17 secures the agitator and finger piece together permanently. The slight lost motion provided by the loose sliding connection between the finger piece and agitator hub permits the Enger piece to be moved upwardly so as to engage the closure in the manner above described or to be withdrawn therefrom so as to rotate the agitator freely in either direction without disturbing the closure. The closure and parts connected thereto may be made of any suitable material, and the relative proportions or form of the several parts may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a condiment holder, the combination of a barrel having an open end and internal screw threads adjacent thereto, a closure for the barrel having external screw threads complemental to the barrel threads, an agitator within the barrel and closure, a ngerpiece connected to the agitator for operation thereof, and means to cause said finger-piece to engage and rotate said closure, substantially as set forth. Y
2. In a condiment holder, the combination of a barrel having an open end and internal screw threads adjacentthereto, a closure for the barrel having external screw threads finger piece may cause rotation of `the elol coinpleniental to the barrel threads, an agisure. i tator Within the barrel, the agitator having In testimony whereof affix my signature a hub extending through the closure, anda in presence of two witnesses.
finger piece slidably and lnonrotatably ALLENQHTT.. mounted on said hub, there being provided Vitnesses:
engaging devices between the finger ieoe W. Gr. GHANCELLOR, and the closure, whereby the rotation o the l H. S. WATSON.
