Description

(No Model.)
G. T. FREEMAN.
lPAUGET.
` No. 265,053. Pawnee@ sepm, 1882.
WITNESSES I W n ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE T. FREEMAN, oF WHIPPANY, NEW JERSEY.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 265,053, dated September 26, 1882. Application mea July 1o, 1F82. (No' model.)
To all whom, 'it may concern:
Be. it known that I, GEORGE T. FREEMAN, of Whppany, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Faucets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to-make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a barrel or other faucet, and `the, novelty consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth., and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a vertical horizontal section, showing the faucet in operation; Fig. 2, a similar view with the faucet removed and the transporting-cap in position, the outiiow of contents being prevented; and Fig. 3a detail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Io enable others skilled in thc art to make and use the invention, I will describe its construction and mode of operation as follows:
A represents an externally-threaded tubular shank, adapted to screw through the head ot' a barrel and through an internally-threaded collar. l3, until the collar a upon the'shank upon the outside and the collar B upon the inside firmly grasp the barrel at this point. Ina recess, d, formed in one side of the projecting end of the shank A, is journaled the pivotal shaft of a lever, D, to the inner end of which is pivoted one end of a link, E, the other end being pivoted to a rubber-packed door or hinged valve, F, hinged to the shank A atf.
H represents acap of plain cylindrical form for a portion of its length, as seen at h, and having a threaded portion, h', which engages the threads on the shank A. The cap has a closed outer end,and when in position,as seen in Fig. 2, for storage or transportation, the 1ever D bears against the cylindrical inner surface and holds the door F tightly locked upon its seat.
I represen ts the faucet proper. It has an internally-threaded shank, I', and an annular recess, t', in which the lever D operates to open and hold open the door F when the faucet is in operation, the said door falling back intoa recess formed in the ball of the faucet. When the faucet I is screwed onto shank A for Atapping the cask or barrel the free end of lever D is caught by the edge t" of the annular recess fi and forced back, which opens valve F, while, when it is screwed off to place cap H on for transportation or storing of the cask, the edge t2 catches the free end of lever D and closes valve F, when cap H can be screwed on,-
the plain cylindrical portion h of it allowing the tree end of lever D to remain in its place and holding it down when in this position.
The handle J operates the plug J', which is provided with the ordinary recess,j, and is operated in the usual manner.
The shank A is adapted to remain in the barrel. When the faucet is in place the valve or door is opened automatically, thus letting the contents iiow freely through the faucet. For storage or shipment the faucet is removed', whichv closes the door, and the cap H pnt in place, which locks the door thus closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is y l. The shank A, door F, link E, and lever D, combined with the cap H, having cylindrical portion h and threaded portion. h', and the whole adapted to serve as set forth.
2. The combination of the shank A, as described, the door F, link E, and lever D with the faucet I, having shank I', and annular recess t', as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PTERsoN A. FREEMAN, IRA W. CoRY.
