JESSE STUART WI-IIILEY AND AMOS F. GAYLORI), OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BAR-BELL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
Application filed May 14, 1910. Serial No. 561,435.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be 1t- Aknown that we, .IEssE STUART VVHrr- LEY and finos F. GArLonD, citizens of the lIhiited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bar-Bells, of which t-he following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in bar bells.
The primary object of said invention is to so construct a device of this character that the weight of the end portions may be varied quickly and conveniently.
lith these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination-and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that the changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device assembled, Fig. 2 a section through one of the end portions, Fig. 3 an end view with the cap removed, Fig. 4 a side elevation of the cap, and Fig. 5 a bottom plan view of the cap.
In the drawings: 10 designates a bar, the end portions of which are secured within the hollow spherical members 11 which are adapted to contain shot, or sand in order to give the device the proper weight. The fact that devices of this character are used by different persons, makes it necessary to vary the weight of the same, and this is accomplished by filling the hollow members 11 with material which may be removed or added to, to diminish or increase the weight. To do this, it is necessary to provide an opening in the hollow members with a closure which may be quickly and conveniently removed and replaced, and which will not jar loose when the device is in use. In order to accomplish this result in a satisfactory manner the end portion of the hollow member is removed, leaving a circular opening, the portion of the hollow member adjacent said opening being bent to form a iiange 12, which is provided with extensions 13 and 14 which are oppositely arranged.
The cap or closure consists of a member 15 which is adapted, when in position, to carry out the general configuration of the hollow member by reason of its rounded portion 16. This cap is provided with a reduced portion 17 which extends within the opening, the annular shoulder 1S formed by reducing the member resting upon the flange 12. The reduced extension 17 is provided with oifset portions 19 and 2O which conform in general dimensions to the extensions 13 and 14.
In assembling the device the members 19 and 2O are brought into alinement with the reduced portions of the flange 12, and the extension 17 forced within the opening. r1`he cap is then rotated by means of the knob 2l until the members 19 and 2O lie directly beneath the extensions 13 and 14, engaging the under face of said extensions. In order to securely hold the cap in this position the extreme end portions of the, cap are provided with the screw threaded enlargements 22 and 23 through which pass screws 24 and 25, which are adapted to enter the slightly depressed portions 26 and 27, formed on the extensions 13 and 14.
It will be seen from the foregoing that such a construction will form a closure which may be easily removed in order to vary the quantity of material carried within the hollow member and readily replaced when the hollow member has been filled. It will also be seen that when once the cap has been securely locked in position, the same will not jar loose when the device is dropped upon the ioor.
It will be noted that the device may be manufactured at a small cost and the vari ous parts readily assembled.
that is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, a bar, a plurality of hollow spherical members arranged upon the end portions of said bar,
each of said members being provided with an opening, a flange formed upon said member adjacent said opening, said fla-nge being provided with a plurality of oppositely arranged extensions, a cap adapted to close said opening, said cap being provided with a reduced portion adapted to enter said opening, screw threaded enlargements formed upon either side of said cap, screws passing through said enlargements, the end por- In testimony whereof We aix our signations of said screws being adapted to entecil` tures, in presence of two Witnesses.
recesses arranged upon the angeY carrie T by the spherical member7 extensions oppositely arranged upon said reduced portions, x said extensions being` adapted to engageA the Vitnesses: under face of the extensions formed upon JOHN VILKIE,
