Description

- E. H. GUILD.
STOPPEB.) LOCKS FOR DECANTERS, m.-
Patented May 8,1877.
QQQQ N PETERS. PHOTO LITHOGR EDGAR H. GUILD, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOPPER-LOCKS FOR DECANTERS, 80c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,579, dated May 8 1877; application filed April 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR H. GUILD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopper-Locks for Decanters, 860.; and 1 do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings furnished and forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a sectional View, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the key.
The object of my invention is to secure the stopper of a bottle or other vessel in such a manner as to prevent the removal of said stopper by means of ordinary appliances; and the invention consists in constructing the same of a series of disks, (one or more of which being elastic,) secured and adjusted upon .a rod by means of an adjusting device connected to said rod, and arranged within a recess formed in the upper disk, whereby said adjusting de vice or lock is inaccessible except to an instrument especially fitted to engage therewith, substantially as described.
A. represents the neck of an ordinary bottle or decanter, B the stopper, and O the key. The stopper B is constructed of a series of disks, b b b, arranged upon a rod, 0, and held together by the screw-nut g. The lower disk b is rigidly attached to the end of the rod 0 in any suitable manner, the remaining disks 1) I) being loosely arranged upon the rod, and susceptible of removal from the same, or adjusted thereon. The upper disk I) is constructed with a socket, 6, into which the end of the rod 0 extends, and to which the adjusting or locking device is connected. In this instance the rod 0 is threaded, as shown, and a correspondingly-threaded nut, g, is employed to engage therewith.
These disks b b" may be made from any material suitable for the purpose.
The intermediate disk D is constructed from an elastic substance, and may be composed of a number of thin disks, as shown, or from a single piece of material, its object being to spread and press firmly upon the internal surface of the neck of the bottle, when the respective parts are compressed together by means of the adjusting-nut g, and thereby secure the stopper, and to recover or contract to its normal position when the nut is unscrewed, and allow the stopper to be removed.
Although I have shown an adjusting device or look consisting of a threaded rod and nut operating within a circular socket, and a corresponding key for operating the same, I do not wish to confine my invention to the particular construction shown, as variousshapes may be adapted, or equivalent instruinentalities employed to efiect the same result, without departing from the spirit of my invention; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stopper for bottles or other vessels, constructed of a series of disks, (one or more of which being composed of an elastic substance,) I
secured and adjusted upon a rod by means of an adjusting device connected to said rod, and arranged'within a recess formed in the upperdisk, whereby said adjusting device or look is inaccessible except to an instrument especially fitted to engage therewith, substantially as described.
