Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDBICK H. HAMAN, OF VAPAKONETA, OHIO.
CHURN-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,218, dated September 14,1886.
Application filed June 19, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRnDRIoK H. HAMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vapakoneta, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel Ohurn-Heads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top or plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
My invention relates to churn-heads; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in theelaims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the body of the barrelchurn, which is provided at one end on the churn-seat B with an annular ring, 0, having shouldered lugs or arms D thereon, four in number, arranged at equidistant points and extending at right angles from said ring C At its inner periphery the annular ring 0 is provided with a rib or bearing-flange, F, upon which the cork packing-ring G rests when the cover or head H. is in place.
The head H is bound with a metallic ring, I, which is secured in place by screws 1, passing from above downthrough the horizontal portion of said ring into the head proper, the vertical flange 1' of said ring I covering the edge of the head, and thereby strengthening and protecting the head. On its upper face the ring I is provided with four staples, K, through which the ends of the four arms L pass and project, and when the lid is in place on the churlrbody extend under the shoulders D of the arms D.
L are pivoted in bifurcated bearings M in the arms N of the spider N.
The head H is provided on its upper face with an internally-threaded casting, P, which issecured to the face of the head H by screws LP, passed downwardly through the arms P of the casting Pinto the head H. A threaded The inner ends of the arms Serial No. 205,701. No model.)
rod, R, having a bifurcated or slotted-upper end, B, is screwed into the threaded casting P, and in the bifurcation R a cam-lever, S, is pivoted, and is provided on its lower edge, near its power end, with a downwardly-proj ecting hookarm, T, which, when the cam-lever S is depressed, engages the under side of either one of the four arms L, to lock the arms L in place under the shouldered arms D.
WVhen the lid is in place on the churn, and the power end of the cam-lever S is depressed, the outer ends of the four arms L are projected under the shoulders D of the arms D, and the lid or cover is firmly locked in place.
The churn-head is provided with a glasscovered view-hole, X, through which the contents of the churn may be inspected without removing the lid when necessary or desirable.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the churn-body having the annular ring provided with the shouldered arms extending from its face and the churn-lid provided at its edge with the annular ring having guide-staples on its face, of the arms pivoted to the spider and projecting through the guide-staples, the bifurcated and threaded shaft in the threaded casting, and
and the pivoted arms, the guidestaples, and
the cam-lever fulcrumed in the bifurcated threaded arms and provided with the hookarm near its outer end, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
FREDRIOK H. HAMAN.
