UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT MALGOM, OF CORNWALL, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM F. MILFORD, OF SAME PLACE.
-FRUlT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 288,084, dated November 6, 1883.
Application filed June 22, 1883.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ROBERT Maroon, of Cornwall, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and 1m- 5 proved Fruit-Jar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The obj set of my invention is to provide a new and improved fruit-jar, which is of very simple construction, can be opened or closed 10 very easily, and is strong and durable; and to this end the invention consists in the peculiar constructionand arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
15 Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification;
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the jar and its cover. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the jar. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modification of the jar.
A glass jar, A, is provided with a thick 2 5 neck, B, which is screw-threaded internally, and is provided along its inner edge with an annular ridge, a, projecting above the top of the neck. A like ridge, b, is formed along the outer edge, and between the two ridges an 0 annular groove, d, is formed in the top of the neck B.
The cover O is made flat on top, and is provided on its under side with a short cylindrical screw-threaded boss, 1), which fits closely in 3 5 threaded opening of the neck or mouth of the jar. The edges of the coverproject a distance beyond the edges of the neck, as shown. The cover is made polygonal, so that it can be turned by hand and without the use of a key.
0 The corners of the covers prevent the hand from slipping while turning the cover. Iprefer to make the cover'octagonal.
(No model.)
A rubber ring, E, which is circular in cross section, is placed in the groove d, and is slightly flattened by the cover when the same is screwed down. The cover can be' made of glass, porcelain, or any other suitable material. The thick neck of the jar,,is very strong, and not apt to be broken. The rubber ring forms a tight joint and prevents accidental unscrewing 0f 5 the cover.
The cover can easily be screwed on and oil without the use of a key or likedevice.
As the top of the cover is flat, one jar can easily be placed on the other and will not slip 5, off, as the plan of the cover is about the same size as the plan of the jar. My improved jars can thus be stacked on each other without requiring an intermediate board above each row of jars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the fruitjar A, provided with the thickened neck B, screwthreaded internally, and having the groove d 6 on its upper surface, of the cover 0, provided with the eXternally-screw-threaded boss D on its under surface, and the packing-ring E, circular in cross-section, substantially as herein shown and described. 7 2. The combination, with the jar A, provided with the thickened neck B, screw-threaded internally, and having the groove d on its upper surface, of the polygonal cover 0, provided with the externally-screw-threaded boss D, 7 and the packing-ring E, circular in cross-section, substantially as herein shown and described.
ROBERT MALCOM.
