ALFRED IIATHAWAY, OF FREETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASE-BURNING STOVES.
Spccication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,693, dated October 14, 1873 5 application filed July 12, 1873.
To all whom it may. concern Be it known that I, ALFRED HATHAWAY,
. of Freetown, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new andl valuable Improvement in Base-Burning Stoves 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and 1i guies of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the bottom of my stove, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections of the stove.
My invention relates to that class of stoves known as magazine or base-burning stoves; and it consists in the novel construction and varrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings like letters in the several iigures indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the base, B the outer shell, and G the top, of a base-burning stove. D represents the magazine; G, the Afire-pot with grate a;V and E, the ash-box; These parts may all be arranged and constructed in any of the known and usual ways, except in so far as hereinafter described. The upper end of the magazineD is surrounded by an annular flange, b, forming part of or made fast to the shell B. Through this flange pass two thumb-screws, d d, which screw into lugs or ears e e on the outer sides of the magazine D, thereby suspending the same in the stove. By means of these thumb-screws d el, the magazine is also adjusted up and down at will. The ash-box -E is placed in a case, H, which is attached to or formed atl the lower end of the re-pot G. This case is also provided with external lugs ff, through which screw from underneath two screws, lz h, said screws passing up through the bottom of the stove or base A, and so arranged that they will not move either up or down in said bottom. The screws h h thus support the ash-box and lire-pot, and by turning the screws they may be adjusted up and down, as desired. The turning of the screws may be accomplished in the following manner: On the lower ends of the screws are toothed wheels c' c', around which passes an endless chain, m. Below the wheel c' on one of the screws is a large wheel, J, extending to the edge of the base A on one side, and provided with a series of holes in its edge. By the use of a lever, p, inserted in one of said holes, the wheel is turned in either direction, thereby turning the screws h h, and adjusting iirepot up or down, as desired.
The object of thus adjusting the magazine or fire-pot is to regulate the amount of fuel in the re-pot, as circumstances may require, this depending upon the distance between the grate and the mouth of the magazine.
I am aware that an adjustable magazine and an adjustable lire-grate are not new, and I therefore do not claim suoliL invention broadly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The adjustable magazine D, having the outer or external lugs e e, incombination with the shell B, having the annular lange b surrounding the upper end of themagazine, and the screws el d passing through'said ange and lugs, substantially as shown, and for the purpose mentioned.
2. In a base-burning stove, the adjustable case H having external lugs ff, carrying the ash-box E and re-pot G, in combination with the base A and adjusting-screws h h, substantially as specified.
3. The means for adjusting the case, con
sisting of the toothed wheelsz' t', endless chain l m, and lever-wheel J substantially as described. In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED HATHAWAY. Witnesses:
WM. F. HAsxELL, ALDEN HATHEWAY.
