THOMAS COX, OF GLOSTER, MONTANA TERRITORY.
MINERS CANDLESTICK.
EJPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 321,798; dated July 7, 1885.
Application filed January 7, 1885.
p T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS 00);, of Gloster, in the county of Lewis and Clark, and .in the Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Miners Candlestick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in miners candlesticks; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a top view of the candlestick. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line a: m, Fig. 2.
The holder consists of the socket-piece a, which is formed with or attached upon a bar, I), that is sharpened at one end, and at the other end the bar is provided with a handle, 0. Upon the socket-piece a is a hinged cover, d, which is provided with a handle, (1 A. Spring 6 tends to close the coverof the socket. Beneath the socket-piece is a spring-holder, f, consisting of a fiat piece of metal bent in circular form, so as to form a spring for grasping the lower end of the candle. This holder (No model.)
f is attached to the barb by means of a pin and staple at 9, so that it can be removed. It is a hook attached at one side of the bar I), for use in suspending the candle-holder.
In using the candlestick it is held in the desired place by the point of the bar bbeing thrust into the heading or other place, or, if more convenient, may be suspended by means of the hook. The candle being inserted, the cover (I is held in an open position, as shown in Fig. 2, and in case there is no person pres cut to attend to the lights the cover d will close down as soon as the candle burns down to the socket, thereby extinguishing the flame at once. This prevents the candle from burning down and heating the socket, and thereby dropping out, with the liability of setting fire to any dry material that may be lying around.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a miners candle stick, of the spring-holder f, detachably secured to the under surface of the same, below the candle socket, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS COX.
