R. L. 8: L. P. MOORE. LAMP CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.

30% 11110016 Loads 1.121 01776 J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. MOORE AND LOUIS P. MOORE, OF STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,677, dated October 12, 1897.
' Application filed November 4, 1896. Serial No. 611,022. (No model.)
T0 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT L. MOORE and LOUIS P. MOORE, residents of Statesville, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and useful device adapted to be applied to a lamp-chimney to prevent a downward draft through the chimney, whereby the flame is either extinguished or is caused to smoke; and another object of the device is to provide suitable means by which a small receptacle or object can be supported upon the lamp-chimney and heated.
XVith these various objects in view our invention consists, essentially, of a wire ring provided with a series of legs adapted to fit upon the upper end of the chimney and a plate hinged to the said wire ring and adapted to rest thereon.
Our invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp provided with our attachment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the said attachment ready to be placed upon the lamp. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, the plate being thrown back. Fig. at is a transverse sectional view, the plate being shown in place upon the ring. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a modification, and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the modification shown in Fig. 5.
In carrying out our invention we employ a wire ring A, to which are attached the legs B, bifurcated at their lower ends, as shown at B. These legs are so arranged and the bifurcation is of such a nature that the ring can be readily attached to the top of the lamp-chimney and will thereby securely hold said ring in place at the top of the chimney.
A plate O is hinged to one side of the ring A, preferably by means of small rings or eyes D, whereby the plate 0 can be turned back and forth as desired.
' Nowwhen the device is set in place in the top of the lamp-chimney and the plate turned down it is obvious that a downward draft through the chimney is prevented, and, furthermore, any small object, such as a cup, can be seated upon the wire ring when the plate is turned back, as in Fig. 3, for the purpose of heating.
In Figs. 5 and 6 we have shown a modification. In this form the cap or plate is removably supported in the wire ring, and the downturned edges extend below the top to the chimney, so that a draft will be prevented going down the chimney. Aspace is also provided, as shown, so that heat, &c. can escape.
It will thus be seen that we provide an eX- ceedingly cheap, simple, and durable attachment which can be connected to any of the lamps now in use and will thoroughly perform all of its intended functions.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lamp attachment consisting of awire ring provided with legs whereby it is supported on the top of the lamp-chimney, and a circular metal plate hinged to the ring at one side thereof, substantially asshown and described.
2. A lamp attachment consisting of a circular ring having the legs bifurcated as described, the circular metal plate and the rings or eyes for connecting the said plate to the wire ring all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
