SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,004, dated March 6, 1894.
Application filed June 28, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL O. FOWLER in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improved Curling-Iron Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved attachment for gas burners or lamps, which will be adapted to facilitate the heating of curling irons or other light articles, and consists in the peculiar construction and combinations of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a partly sectional side view of the improved heater. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, on the line 22 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a part of the device detached from the main portion.
The shell A, is preferably constructed of sheet metal in cylindrical form, having suitable dimensions for its use, it being essential that excess of weight be avoided in the production of the entire device. A flat top a, is secured on the shell A, which piece is centrally perforated, as at a, and below said top piece the shell is apertured at several points, preferably in the form of horizontal slots 1). The top aperture c and slots 1) afiord sufficient openings to insure draft for flame introduced below in the shell A. Thereis a detachable bottom piece B, provided, comprising a fiat sheet metal disk of a correct diameter, having a circular flange 01 extended at a right angle from its upper surface and near the circular edge. The flange cl is proportioned in diameter so that it may he slid into the lower end of the shell A, and by its frictional engagement be retained until designedly removed. A tubular piece e is secured in the bottom piece B, at its center, and projects upwardly within the shell A, when the bottom piece is in place, the open end of the tube e, which extends through the bottom piece, being adapted to receive a gas burner C, that is part of a gas fixture, not shown, so

that the application of the tubular piece to the burner will adapt the latter to sustain the heater shell A, in an upright position, and confine Within the shell the flame from ignited gas escaping from the burner. On one side of the shell A, at a point near its lower edge, a piece of mica D, is clamped over an aperture formed in the shell, an annular border plate g that is riveted or secured in place serving to retain the mica and form a finish for the device where the aperture is produced. In the flat wall of the bottom piece B, around the holder tube 6, a number of perforations h are produced, these holes being designed to afford a supply of air to the ignited gas jet when the device is in service. A handle E, is provided,which is aflixed to the side of the shell A, near its lower edge, which will prevent an excessive heating of the handle when the device is in use.
To heat a curling iron of the ordinary form, the part to be heated is inserted in the perforation a ofthe top a, after the gas jet has been ignited,which will quickly raise the temperature of the metallic hair curling implement (not shown) to a proper degree for effective use. If the heat of a lamp is to be utilized for the heating of a curling iron, the bottom piece B is then removed, which will allow the shellAto be placed over the burner of the lamp, that may be of any style, using either oil or spirits as an illuminant, the heating operation being identical with that effected by the gas jet. The transparent mica piece D, affords means to note the height of the flame from a lamp or gas jet, and will shed a certain amount of light if this is desirable while using the device at night.
If desired, a small vessel containing material that is to be heated maybe placed upon the flat top a, and the contents warmed by either the lamp or gas jet.
Having thus described our. invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a shell having a flat top, and lateral slots near said top, of a removable perforated bottom piece for the shell, substantially as described.
