Description

J. H. DEAN.
LANTERN.
APPLICATION man JAN.8, 1918.
M Q M 0 U N 7w M W W n JOHN H. DEAN, or TOLEDO, OHIO.
LANTERN;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application fi-led January 8, 1918. Serial No. 210,851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and use ful Lantern; and 1] do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as w ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referones being had to the accompanylng drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to lanterns, and particularly, but not necessarily, to 'those of the acetylene gas burning type.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved lantern of this character and primarily, first, to so locate the gas generating tank that it will not be disposed above the burner in position to be heated the heat arising from the burner when lighted, and, second, to provide simple and efficient means for permitting the removal ofa globe from, or its insertion into the lantern frame. Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from thefollowing detailed description.
The invention is fullydescribedin the following specification, and while, in its broader. aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a. lantern embodying my invention with parts broken away, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of'a top portion thereof with the top or dome portion of the lantern raised to permit a removal of a globe from or its insertion within the lantern, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of a portion of the upper part of the lantern, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the frame bar.
The lantern frame, in the present instance, comprises the four uprights or side bars, 1, 2, 3 and 4, preferably formed of a heavy grade of wire and being shaped adjacent to their lower ends to provide the reentrant portions 5 on which rests and .is secured the member 60,11 which theglob'e- 7 is intended to rest and which is customarily of ring form. The portions of thesi'de barsbelow the reentrant portions 5-formdivergent or downwardly and outwardly extending legs -wardly converge and have their bent toward each other 8 which connect to a base ring or member 9. This base ring is of circular form and has its ends spaced apart and bent upward to form the two uprights 1 and 2 so that the base member and said uprights are integral. The lower ends of the other two uprights 3 and 4 are looped around upwardly ofl'set portions'lO of the base ring as shown, or they may be attached thereto in any other suitable manner.
The dome or top 11 of the lantern is provided at its lower edge with an inwardly turned annular flange 12, the inner edge of which is turned upward as shown at 13 and forms the tOp with a central restricted opening into which the upper edge of the globe 7 is intended to feed. The top 11 is hingedly connected adjacent to one side edgev thereof tothe upper ends of the uprights 1 and 2, which uprights for such purpose, u-pupper ends to form axially alined trunnions 14, which feed into a bearing socket 15 secured to the under side of the'flange 12 adjacent to one side edge of the top. The flange 12 adjacent to the opposite side edge of the top is provided with two radially elongated slots 16, which are equidistantly spaced from opposite sides of the bearing 15 and are properly positioned to permit the insertion of the upper ends of the uprights 3 and 1 therethrough when the top is in closed position. The upper ends of the uprights 3 and 4 are provided with the vertical or substantially straight portions 17 adapted to be inserted through the respective slots 16 and each of these portions is provided at or adjacent to its outward end withan outwardly ofiset shoulder 18, which in the present instance, is formed by turning the end upright upon itself. Due to theoutward springing tendencyof the uprights 3 and l, it is necessary to radially depress them relative to the lantern axis in order to place them in register with the respective slots 16 to permit the insertion of their upper ends therethrough, and when such. insertion has been effected, the uprights upon being released, spring outward to the outer ends of said slots with their shoulders 18 disposed above the outer end wall 'of'the slot. It is thus evident that an upward swinging or raisingof the top from engagement with the uprights 3 and L is prevented until *such uprights have been in wardly depressed to withdraw the shoulders 18 thereof from looking register with the side of the flange 12. A spring wire 19 is provlded on the bottom of the top flange 12 and has portions at opposite sides of the flange axis which are adapted to engage and bear down on the shoulder 20 at the upper end of the globe 7 when the top 11' generator is provided with'the customary lower chamber 23 for containing acetylene and with the upper water chamber 24. Water is permitted to slowly drip or feed into the acetylene chamber, and such feed is controlled in the present instance, by a valve of which 25 is the control handle. A gas outlet pipe 26-leads transversely from the chamber 23 beneath the globe supporting member 6 and thence upward through the center of said member being provided at its top with a burner tip 27.
It is evident that I have provided a simple, efficient, strong and durable lantern, the top 11 of which is capable of being easily and quickly opened to permit the removal of a globe 7 from, or its insertion within the lantern frame by simply pressing inward on the uprights 8, 4L and then turning the top 11 back upon the hinge uprights 1, 2. When a globe has been placed withm the frame, the top is swung down on to the uprights 3, 4 and said uprights'pressed'inward from their normal outwardly sprung positions to place them in register with the slots 16, 16 in the top into which they then enter and spring outward to place the shoulders 18 intolocking engagement with the outer end walls of said slots. It is also evident that by placing the generator 21 at the side of the lower portion of the lantern frame, instead of at the top thereof, over the burner, as is customarily done in lanterns of this type, the contents of the generator is not heated by radlant heat from the burner. The heat of generators by radiant heat from the burners when disposed above the same, is found to be extremely objectionable and to cause the generated steam to enter and pass through the burner pipe with the acetylene gas thereby impairing and frequently putting out the flame.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts as it is capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lantern, a top having an inturned flange at its bottom edge forming a globe receiving opening, said flange having spaced radial slots at one side of its axis, a pair of upright frame members pivoted at their upper ends to the lower edge of said top at the opposite side of the axis thereof to said slots and a pair of upright frame members having their upward ends adapted to project through said slots and shouldered to engage over the outer wall of the respective slots to releasably retain the top in closed position, said shouldered uprights normally springing outward beyond the outer ends of said slots.
2. In a lantern, a frame comprising a top, a circular base member formed of wire, the ends of which are spaced apart and extend upward therefrom to form uprights, and a plurality of uprights extending upward in spaced relation from other portions of said base member, said uprights having their upper ends supporting and engaging said top.
3. In a lantern, a frame having a plurality of transverselyspaced upright members, an acetylene gas generator disposed between and carried by two of said uprights ad]acent tothe lower ends thereof and having a gas outlet pipe extending therefrom and terminating in a burner within said frame.
4:. In a lantern, a frame having a base 100 portion and a plurality of transversely spaced uprights rising therefrom and an acetylene gas generator carried by a portion of said uprights at one side of said frame and coiiperating with said base portion to 105 support the frame, said generator having a gas pipe extending transversely therefrom and terminating in a burner within said frame.
5. In a lantern, a top, a frame support- 110 mg said top and having a circular base member formed of wire, the ends of which extend upward therefrom to form uprights and having their upper ends forming trunnions to which the top is hinged, and an .115 upright extending upward from said base member in spaced relation to said first upright and having its upper end in supporting catch engagement with the top.
6. In a lantern, a frame having a top, a base portion, and uprights rising from said base portion and supporting said top, and an acetylene gas generator carried by some of said uprights atone side of the frame and cooperating with the base to form a support for the frame, said generator having a gas outlet pipe terminating in a burner Within the frame. I
7. In a lantern, a frame comprising a top, a base member formed of wire, the ends of which are spaced apart and extend upward therefrom to form uprights in supporting engagement with said top, one or more other uprights rising from said base member in supporting engagement with the top, and an acetylene generator secured to said first mentioned spaced uprights and having its bottom portion disposed between the spaced ends of said base member.
8. In a lantern, a frame comprising a top, a circular base formed of wire, the ends of which are spaced apart and extend upward therefrom to form uprights, a plurality of uprights extending upward in spaced relation from other portions of said base member, said uprights having reentrant portions forming supporting shoulders and having their upper ends in supporting engagement with said top, and a shade supporting member carried by said reentrant portions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
