Description

STOVE.

llhlTThlU ETATE ATEN ROBERT K. CLARK, 0F EVANS'ION, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STOVE COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
STOVE.
Application filed May 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT K. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at tvanston, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying (l ra wing.
This invention relates to improvements in stoves, of that type which are constructed and adapted to receive as fuel what is commonly referred to as solid alcohol, or canned heat, which contained in a can.
The stove to which my improvement is applied comprises an open ended drum hav ing suitable siqiporting feet extending from its lower end and angular-shaped arms projectiug from its upper end to support the utensil placed thereon, the contents of which are to be heated or cooked.
My improvement consists in providing a swinging triangular grid or frame adapted to be swung in position to be supported by the angular top arms for receiving a cup or other article too small in diameter to be supported by the arms at the upper end of the drum.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the stove with my improvement in position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view with my improvement shown in solid lines to receive and support a small article or utensil, and swung back and down in dotted lines when a large utensil is being used.
Referring now to the drawings in which similar reference characters denote the same parts, 1 is an open ended drum or casing made of sheet metal. Attached to the inner side of this drum are three members 2, which are preferably formed from folded sheet metal. These members are attached to the drum by means of rivets 3. The lower ends of these members 2 extend below the drum 1 and are formed into angular-shaped supporting legs 4, which support the drum a suitable distance from the table or other support upon which the stove is placed.
It is well known that the cans (not shown) containing the solid alcohol or canned heat are provided with external grooves extending upward, and these Specification of Letters Patent.

grooves receive the inwardly bent projections 5, which projections support the can. The can containing the solid alcohol must be inserted into the stove from its upper end, and as a consequence, the upwardly proecting supporting arms 6 cannot have their inner ends '7 extend inward beyond the surface of the members 2. Therefore, the angular supporting arms 6 will not support any article that is smaller in diameter than the can, or properly support any article with a tapered bottom smaller in diameter than the diameter of the can.
My improvement consists in providing a stove with a swinging member 3, which will swing over and rest upon the inwardly extending portions 7 of the supporting arms 6. This member 8 is substantially triangular in plan view, having one end or apex 9 of the angle enlarged and provided with an opening 10 to receive the inwardly extending end 1' of one of the arms (3. The end 7 which passes through the opening 10 is elongated and extends downwardly and outwardly, as shown at 11, which forms a closed triangular supporting end for that arm 9. By reason of this construction, the end 9 of the triangular member 8 is connected with its supporting arm 6 in a manner to prevent its detachment, and to permit it to be swung in a horizontal position, as shown in solid lines in the two figures of the drawings, to receive and support a small utensil, such as a small cup or other article, such as is frequently used in nurseries. The member 8 will be swung outward and downward to the positions shown in dotted lines Fig. 2, when a large article is in position on the stove. The two other ends 12 of the triangular member 8 are provided with laterally extending ears 13, which are at opposite sides of the ends 7, and hold the triangular member in position against lateral movement. It will be noticed that the ends 12 are, therefore, substantially of an in. verted U-shape to receive the ends 7 of the supporting arms 6, and serve to hold the member 8 against any lateral displacement or movement when it is in a horizontal position to receive and support smaller articles or utensils.
Attention is directed to the fact that the fiat end 9 is slightly bent downward, as shown at 14, so that when its loop is interlocked with the loop of the arm 6, the frame 8 is permitted to rest in the horizontal position shown, when in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. in a stove the combination with an open ended drum provided its upper end with a plurality of upwardly projecting arms, of a frame having one part swingingly connected with one arm and its free portion adapted to rest on the other arms.
in a stove the combination of an open ended drum having a plurality of upwardly projecting arms, of a frame swingingly connected with one of its arms and th tree portion of the frame interlocking with the other arms to prevent relative lateral movement between the tree part of the frame and the arms engaged thereby.
3. In a stove the combination of an open ended drum having a plurality of upwardly projecting arms of an angular frame having one apex swingingly connected with one of the arms and its other apenes provided with downwardly extending ears interlockinsane-2 ing with the other arms for the purpose de scribed &. in a stove the combination of an open ended drum, having upwardly projecting arms, one of the arms provided with a loop, an angular frame having one apex provided with an opening interlocking with the'said loop, and the other apexes provided with downwardly projecting ears interlocking with the other arms.
5. In a stove, the combination or" an open ended drum, having three upwardly projecting arms, one of which is provided with a loop, a triangular frame having one apex provided with an opening interlocking with the said loop and the other apexes provided with downwardly projecting ears interlocking with the other arms.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence or two witnesses.
