MINERS CANDLESTICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,691, dated August 17, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS COX, of Gloster, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Miners Candlestick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of candlesticks used by miners, and illustrated, de-
scribed, and claimed in my Patent'No. 321,798, granted to me on the 7th day of July, 1885, the present invention consisting of an improved mechanism for preventing the candle from slippingvout of its holder.

Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the candlestick.- Fig. 2 is a side view in partial section. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view representing the socket in which the-candle isheld, and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of a portion of the candlestick.
The holder consists of a central socket, 10,
in which the candle is fitted, said socket being formed with or attached to a bar, 11, one end of which is pointed, while the other is made to constitute a handle, 12. To the upper end of the socket there is hinged a cover, 13, provided with a thumb-piece, 14, and this cover is normally held closed by a spring, 15, arranged as illustrated. Upon one side of the socket 10 there is a boss, 16, in which 5 there is secured a hook, 17, arranged as best shown in Fig. 3. Upon the under side of the bar, and just in front of the handle 12, there is a downwardly-extending lug or pro jection, 18, that is centrally apertured, in order to receive and guide a sliding pin or catch, 19, the forward end of which projects through an aperture formed in the lower portion of the socket 10, the point 20 of the pin 19, which extends through the socket, being- 5 of less diameter than the'main body of the pin. Just back of the point 20 there is arranged a finger 'piece, 21, that is held against the shoulder formed by the meeting of the point 20 with the main body of the pin 19,
said finger-piece being held in position bya pin, 22, that is passed through an aperture formed in the point 20. A spiral spring, 23,
is arranged about the pin 19, and tends to force the pin to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 4; bnt'froln the construction described it will be seen that the point 20 may be withdrawn from its extended position within the socket to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 2, and when so withdrawn a candle, 30, may be placed within the socket, the cover 13 being forced back at this time to the position in which it is shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
Too great a retraction of the point of the pin 19 is prevented by a stop, 24, formed upon 6 the bar 11, and located as clearly indicated in the drawings.
In using the candlestick the pointed end of the bar 11 is thrust into the heading or other proper place; or, if more convenient, the can- 7 1 dlestick maybe suspended by means of the hook 17. The cover 13 is provided in order that should the candle burn down within the socket the cover will close and extinguish the flame, thus preventing the candle from burning down too low and thereby heating the socket, so that the body of the candle will melt, and so melting drop out and ignite any dry material that might be lying about.
Having thus fully described my invention, 8c what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a miners candlestick having a socket, of a movable locking pin extending transverse to said socket, with its forward end entering said socket, substantially as set forth.
2. 'A miners candlestick comprising the handle, the attaching device, the vertical socket, and the transversely-sliding springc actuated pin extending at its forward end into the socket, substantially as set forth.
3. A miners candlestick comprising the handle 12, point 11, intermediate socket, 10, apertured transversely, as described, the lug 5 18, apertured in alignment with the socketaperture, the pin 19, sliding in said apertures, and having a.finger-piece, 21, and the spiral spring 23 on the pin between thefinger-piece and lug 18, substantially as set forth.
