WATCH-=CHAIN ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,718, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed March 1, 1887. Serial No. 229,348.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, FREDERICK W ILLIAM BRUEOKNER, of Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and Improved Vest Attachments for tVatch Ohains, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a vest attachment for watch-chains, and has for its object to provide a means of attaching one end of a watchchain to a vest, wherein the device will be on namental and obviate the necessity of passing the chain through or connecting the same to a button-hole.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a partial front elevation of a vest, illustrating the application of my device; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same.
It has been the almost universal practice for gentlemen heretofore to attach their watchchains to the vest by passing the same through a button-hole,or securing it,in connection with the button-hole, by means of a ring or hook, whereupon the button-hole to which attachment is made becomes worn and more or less ragged through the constant friction.
it is the aim of this invention to overcome this difficulty, and to that end an ornamental body, A, which in this instance is made in the form of a lizard, is secured at any desired point upon the vest B by passing athreaded pin, a, integral with the under side of said body, through the cloth and securing the device in position by a cap, b, screwed upon the said pin.
Beneath the forward portion of the head (Z of the lizardlike body a transverse recess, D, is cut, and in the extreme end of the said head, upon the under side,a longitudinal aperture, d, is formed, adapted to intersect with the aforesaid recess D. Flush with the rear wall of the recess D an annular apertured projection, E, is provided, adapted to extend (No model.)
longitudinally the body a distance to the rear, having a slot, 6, cut longitudinally therein, which slot is made to extend nearly from end to end of the said tubular projection. Within the tubular projection E a bolt, F, is madeto slide, provided with a knob,f, extending from the slot 6, which bolt is actuated by a coilspring, f, bearing against the rear end of said bolt and the rear wall of the projection E, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The forward end of the bolt F in its normalposition rests in the aperture d.
In operation the device is attached at any desired point upon the vest, the head being placed in direction of the watch-pocket. The bolt F is then drawn back, and a ring, M, at the end of the chain M, is inserted in the recess D. The boltis thereupon released and the attachment is secured.
The device may be made in any form to represent animals, birds, flowers, or an ordinary bar,and the said device may be secured to the vest in a multiplicity of ways, and I there fore do not confine myself to the means of attachment shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a device for securing a watch-chain to a vest, consisting of an ornamental body, A, adapted for attachment to the vest outside the pocket, provided with the recess D, aperture (1, and a tubular projection,E, beneath the said body,a spring-actuated bolt, F, within said projection, adapted to enter the said aperture Z,and means for securing the body to the vest, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the body A. adapted for attachment to a vest, provided with an integral pin, a, carrying a cap, I), a recess,D, and intersecting aperture d, and a slotted tubular proj ection,E,all beneath said body, of the spring-actuated bolt F,provided with a knob, f, and the watch-chain M, all arranged to operate substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
, FREDERICK WILLIAM BRUEUKNER.
