EDWARD DANIEL GANTER, OF GLASGOW, KENTUCKY.
LACE PIN CR BROOCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,719, dated May 29, 1888.
Application filed September 9, 1887. Serial No. 249,232. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DANIEL GAN- TER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glasgow, in the county of Barren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lace Pins or Brooches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a front view of my improved lace pin or brooch. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
Similar letters of reference denote corrcspending partsin all the figures.
My invention has relation to pins orbro0cl1- es; and it has for its object to provide means whereby the ends of laces, generally worn around the necks of ladies and children, may be conveniently and safely secured; and my invention may also be used for various other purposes where a safety-pin is desired; and it consists in the peculiar construction and com bination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA denotes the body-plate, (shown rectangular in form,) but which, if desired, can be changed to any suitable shape without materially affecting the result produced by the several parts of my invention. To the rear side ofthis plate and at the ends thereof are secured a sleeve and a cone-shaped seat, Band 0, respectively. To the small outer end of the cone-shaped seat is fixed an ornamental ball or stud, D, and secured to the end of the body-plate carrying the sleeve is a spring, E, preferably formed with a forked or bifurcated bod y, and a curved projection, G, at its free end. Formed intermediate the ends of this spring is an inwardlyinclined catch or tooth, H, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
I represents the pin, having a ball,.T, at one end corresponding in shape with the ornamental ball which is secured to the small end of the cone-shaped seat. A. small collar, J,
havingits inner face beveled, is secured to this pin slightly beyond the ball, and near the securely held in position by means of the spring having its tooth or catch engaging the flat outer face of the small collar situated upon the pin near its head.
When it is desired to detach my device from the fabric, the curved projection of the spring is depressed and the pin is drawn through the sleeve B until the enlarged or flattened portion K, near the point of the pin,c0mesin contact with the said sleeve.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood. It will be seen that the enlarged or flattened portion near the point of the pin will prevent the pin from being entirely withdrawn from the sleeve, thus preventing the pin from becoming lost, and by beveling the inner face of the collar permits it to slide smoothly and easily over the inclined tooth or catch.
My invention is simple in construction, inexpensive in its manufacture, and is exceed ingly useful for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, with a body plate hav ing at one end a sleeve and at the other end a seat, of a pin having an enlarged or flattened portion near its point.
2. The combination, with a body-plate having at one end a sleeve and at the other end a cone-shaped seat, and a spring secured to the end of the body-plate carrying the sleeve, said spring having a tooth or catch located thereon, of a pin having a collar near its outer end.
3. The combination of a bodypla-te having at one end a cone shaped seat, a ball or stud projecting from the small end of said seat, a sleeve secured at the other end of said plate,
and a spring secured to the said plate near In testimony thatIclaim the foregoing as my the sleeve, said spring provided at its free own I have hereunto affixed my signature in end with a curved projection and with an inpresence of two Witnesses.
wardly-inclined tooth or catch, with aheaded EDWARD DANIEL GANTER. pin having a flattened or enlarged portion Witnesses:
near its point and a collar near its head, said JERRY BLACK LESLIE,
collar having its inner face beveled. THOMAS DICKINSON.
