UNITED STATES PATENT ITFICE..
GEORGE D. STEVENS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
\ IMPROVEMENT IN CHATELAINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,816, dated December 10, 1878 application filed November 14, 1878.
To all whom it may conce-rn:
.Be it known that I, GEORGE D. STEVENS, of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohatelaines, which invention is fully set fort-h in the following specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my chatelaine. lFig. 2 is a side view of the supporting-plate, partly in section. ot', showing the manner of attachin g the same to a button-hole.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to obtain a chatelaine which can be used in a variety of positions, so as to produce different effects; and it consists in a supporting-plate adapted to be attached to a garment, a clevis attached to the supporting-plate, and a chain passing through the clevis, having one or two stops, so combined that if the supporting-plate .is attached to a garment-as, for instance, a vest-the chain may be used for carrying a pocket-Watch at one end and a charm at the other end, or for carrying other articles, the chain being capable of adjustment, but being held against detachment by its stop or stops, while, if the two ends of the chain 4are fastened together, the saine is converted into a necklace, and the supporting-plate constitutes a charm or pendant. To adapt the supporting-plate for attachment in the button-hole of a garment, I attach to one of the faces thereof a double loop, which has a light and graceful appearance and practically fulills the desired object.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the supporting-plate of my chatelaine, which, in the example shown, has a triangular shape, B is the chain.
Fig. 3 is a rear view there.
clevis B, and is provided with a stop, D, on opposite sides thereof, these stops being ornamented, and preferably in the style of the supporting-plate A. The letter E designates a double loop, which is attached to the plain or rear face of the supporting-plate A by means of a stud, c, and which serves to fasten the supporting-plate in the button-hole of a garment. This double loop is light and cheap, and forms a very effective means for accomplishing the desired object.
It will be seen that when the supportingplate A is fastened to a garment the chain C is brought in a position for use in carrying any small articles which it is convenient or desirable to have about the person, the same being capable of a certain movement, but be ing prevented from slipping ont of the clevis; While if it is desirable to convert the chain into a necklace, this can be done by connecting together the two ends of the chain, when the supportingplate A forms a pendant or charm. g
that I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A chatelaine consisting of a supportingplate having a clevis, through which passes a chain constructed with two stops, each of which is arranged intermediate of the ends of the chain and the clevis, substantially as shown and described.
2. A supporting-plate for chatelaines having an attached double loop for fastening the saine in the button-hole of a garment, and an attached clevis for supporting a chain, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of November, 1878.
