GOMBINED BUTTON HOOK AND BRACELET. 'No. 401,746. Patented Apr.-23, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT Urrrcn.
ALICE JOIINS'IONE, OF AVONDAIJE, NEW JERSEY.
- COMBINED BUTTON-HOOK AND BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,746, dated April 23, 1889. Application filed January 14, 1889. $erial No. 296,253. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICE J OHNSTONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avondale, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Button-Hook and Bracelet, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bracelets; and it consists of a bracelet a detachable portion of the body of which constructed to constitute a'button-hook for use as such. To this end the bracelet may be constructed in different Ways, some of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1V is a perspective view of a bracelet with the button-hook in place thereon, completing the bracelet. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bracelet, the button-hook portion being removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the detached button-hook. Fig. l is a similar view showing the use of a slightly-modified form of the hook port-ion. Figs. 5, (3, and '7 are views of modified forms of the button-hook. portion detached from the bracelet portion. Fig. 8 is a plan view, Fig. 9 a side elevation, and Fig. 10 a section on the line 10 10, Fig. 8, of a modified form of the bracelet.
In the class of articles to which this invention relates it has heretofore been proposed to so construct an integral and detachable portion of the bracelet as to constitute a buttonhook. it sometimes happens that the conneetion of the body of the bracelet with the hook impairs the ci'ticiency of the latter. To obviate this difficulty, I make the hook integrally a part of a bracelet, but so connect it as to be detachable therefrom. Thus, in the forms shown in the drawings, A represents the body portion of a bracelet, which may be of any desired material, form, or configuration, and which may be ornamented or not, as desired. It may be ornamented by balls 15 O, and such ornamentation may constitute part of the means of securingthebutton-hook portion to the bracelet-body. As shown, the balls at the extremities of the bracelet-body are sufficiently above the line of the body to provide a seat below the heads for the buttoner portion 1), which is constructed to hook upon the body portion. As
shown, the buttoncr portion D is an independent link provided with looped ends 0, Figs. 1 and 3, or hooked ends Fig. 4, the central portion spread or capable of spreading sufliciently to pass over the balls or enlargements B C, after which the ends of the body pass into the end loops of the part D, as shown in Fig. 1, in which position the buttoner forms an integral portion of the bracelet and completes its structure. In such construction the braceletbody is slightly elastic, so that the tendency of its extremities is to spring apart, thus serving to keep the loops of the part 1) securely seated under the enlargements l3 \Vhen it is desired to use the buttoner, it is only necessary to slightly compress the body, to carry the ends toward each other, and to draw one of the enlargements from one of the loops of the buttoner, when the latter may be easily removed from engagement therewith, the opposite end being then free to be slipped from beneath its enlargement and wholly removed.
The form of the buttoner portion is not essential, so long as it maybereadily combined with the bracelet portion and removed there from. Thus in Fig. 4. the button-hook portion, instead of being of link form, is simply a single stem havinghooked ends (Z, adapted to engage with any form of connecting device upon the body portion. In Fig. 5 the buttoner has a loop, e, at one end and a hook, 'i, at the opposite end. In Fig. 6 the buttoner portion is shown as consisting of two loops jointed together, and in Fig. 7 the buttoner portion is shown as ornamented by a medallion, S. In each of the forms shown the buttoner portion may be straight, so far as its length is concerned, or curved to better conform with the shape of the rest of the bracelet, or of any other desired form. In Figs. 8, 9, and 10 the buttoner is shown as having a diskular handle, f, at one end and hook at the other, each adapted to fit a socket, 33, in one end of the body portion said socket being undercut, so that after slipping in the Q]'ll&1'g(3(l end of the buttoner and drawing it slightly outward it will be locked temporarily in place.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the presence of the buttoner portion does not destroy the aesthetic effect of the bracelet as a Whole or detract from its use as an ornamentation.
It may be stated that the buttoner portion may be connected to the bracelet by a chain, T, or other similar flexible connection, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus prevent the former from being lost or misplaced.
WVhat I claim is 1. A bracelet consisting of a body portion and a detachable buttoner portion, the body portion having bearings or connections for the attachment of the ends of the detachable portion, substantially as set forth.
2. A bracelet formed of abody portion and a detachable hook portion, the latter forming an integral part of the bracelet and Wholly removable from the body portion, substantially as described.
3. A combined bracelet and button-hook,
the body portion of the bracelet terminating 1n enlargements Which form part of the securlng means, and the removable button-hook portion having ends adapted to engage with said enlargements to complete the securing means, substantially as described.
4. A bracelet consisting of a body and a buttoner port-ion, the body portion of the bracelet formed of springy material and terminating in connections, and the removable buttoner portion having ends adapted to detachably engage With said connections, substantially as described.
5. A bracelet consisting of a body portion and a detachable buttoner portion, the body portion having bearings for the attachment of the detachable portion, and a chain for connecting the buttoner and bracelet portion together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave sign ed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALICE JOHNSTONE.
