J. B. VAN HOUTEN.
BRACELET. I N0. 258,165. Patented May 16,. 1882.
1 I I I m! j m- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. VAN HOUTEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,165, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed August 2, 188].
To all whom "it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. VAN HOUTEN, a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracelets and I'do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of refercnce marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
The objectof this invention is to give greater security to'the bracelet upon the wrist, and to facilitate the operation of unclaspin g the'same; and it consists in the arrangement and construction of parts, substantially as will be set forth, shown, and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the several letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bracelet embodying 2 my improvements. Fig.2is asectional view of the same on theline war, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a dis connected plan of one section separated-from the other; and Fig. 4 is a section of the cliptongue, taken through line y. v I 0 In carrying out my invention I form the bracelet-body A in substantially the manner shown, and to one extremity of one section I attach a spring-clip tongue, a, formed of the spring-clip b and connecting portion c,ithe lat- 5 ter formed in the manner shown in Fig. 4, in
which said portions are shown to be longitudinally curved, by means of which increased strength is given thereto, so as that the necessary spring in the clip will be confined to the 40 portion b, as will be understood. Upon the body of the bracelet, at or near the extremityof the portion carrying the springclip tongue, Ifulcruin a lever which engages (No model.)
with the spring-clip b, as shown, so that when the end to which the means a are attached is raised the opposite end will depress the said spring-clip and (when the latter is connected or in engagement with the usual stay,f, in the opposite extremity of the bracelet) allow the ends of the bracelet to become detached. The lever is not rigidly united or formed integral with the spring I), but merely rests thereon, as will be understood, although [do notaltogether wish to limit myself to this feature. -By this arrangement I overcome certain difficulties experienced in the use of the clip heretofore in use, wherein a depressing-piece rigidly secured upon the spring 1) projects above the surface of the bracelet, and is very apt to be accidentally acted upon, the bracelet opened, and perhaps lost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, in a bracelet with one section provided with a spring-clip, of the lever pivoted upon said section and engaging at one end with said spring-clip, having a normal tendency to hold and holding the other end of said lever in engagement with said section, substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.
2.. The'conibination, in a bracelet, with the spring-clip a, and lever d lying in close 'engagement with the body of the bracelet, of the 75 hand-piece linked to the said lever, substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of 80 JOHN B.- VAN HOUTEN.
July, 1881.
Witnesses CHARLES H. PELL, OLIVER DRAKE.
