SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,685, dated December 13, 1898. Application filed August 16, 1897. Serial No. 648,372. (No model.)

To all' whom t may concern:

Beitknown thatLRoBERT DEATONDODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adel, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Snaps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in snaps, and especially to that class of snaps designed for harness of horses or other animals, and more especially to that part of the harness where the lines or bitching-straps are connected-to the bridle and Where the hold back-straps are to be secured to the harness; and the objects of myimprovements are, first, to'provide a harness-snap that will be very strong and durable; second, to provide a harness-snap that will be very easy of manipulation at all times; third, to provide a harness-snap that can be attached to or detached from other parts of the harness without removing gloves or mittens from hands, and, fourth, to provide a harness-snap that is very simple in construction and that can be manufactured and sold at a very small price. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of my entire device With strap and buckle attached to show the relative position of all the parts. Fig. 2 is a front view of my device with strap detached, the more clearly to show the parts of my device.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.

My device, as shown, consists of but three parts, viz: A, B, and P. It can,however, be made in two parts by dispensing with splice G and forming the three parts out of Y two pieces of metal. In referring to the parts, A is designated as the hook, B the tongue, and P. the spring. My device can be attached to any ordinary harness line or strap provided with a buckle as is now in ordinary use, as shown in the drawings, or it can be used Withoutabuckle, if desired. The tonguePshould be made so strong that it will not be bent or broken. The hook A should be made small enough to fit snugly on ring over which it is used. It can be readily seen that if properly constructed, as stated, this will form a very durable snap, and one that it will be almost impossible to break or get out of order rin ordinary use.

The mode of using my snap is very simple. After the snap is attached to the line or strap, as shown, by bringing the upper part of the tongue B firmly against the ring in the harness by pressing on the back part of the hook A with thumb or finger the tongue B is forced to the left and allows the ring to enter the hook A. To release the ring from the snap, simply grasp the end of the line O below the buckle D, with the thumb on or near the buckle D, and by holding the strap irmly in hand and pressing with the thumb the tongue B is forced back and the ring released from the hook A.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A snap-hook comprising a hook having a resilient shank and a rigid closing member attached to the outer end of the shank whereby in operation the hook moves with relation to the closing member.
