W. P. WRITING.
WATGH CHAIN SWIVEL.
WITNESSES.
a Via/M Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
FIE-4.3.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM F. WHITING, OF NORlVOOD, RI-IODE ISLAND.
WATCH-CHAIN SWIVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,908, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed September 17,1885. I Serial No. 177,411. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. WHITING, of Norwood, in the county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Chain Swivels; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is a View of my improved swivel. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3shows top, bottom, and cross-section of strap. Fig. 4 shows parts of loop detached.
The object of my invention is to produce a swivel which shall be of greater strength and durability than those now in use for like purposes; and it consists in the construction, com bination, and uniting of the several parts without the employment of solder, as hereinafterdescribed.
In the drawings, A,Figs. 1 and 2, is the barrel or body of the swivel; B, the loop, and C the ring for attaching it to the chain. The loop B is made in a solid piece and afterward cut in two places to make a movable part, D, and permit the introduction of the watch-ring. The inner end of the movable part D of the loop B rests upon a spring, E, within the barrel A, and has a movement against the resistance of such spring, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2.
The loop B is held in place by a strap or bar, F, which rests in the bottom of the said loop, its outer edge resting upon a shoulder within the barrel A, and is firmly secured in place by turning over the edge of the latter. The turned-over edge of the barrel A also rests in and fills the grooves a a in the sides of the loop 13, which materially adds to the strength of the device.
The strap or bar F is provided upon either side with a slot or opening for the reception of the sides of the loop B, and is also provided with a pin, G, upon which the movable part D works. Upon the under side of the strap or bar F is a collar, H, which nearly surrounds the lower arms of the movable part D, fitting closely within the barrel A, and serves to prevent any sidewise wabble of the part D (in ring its desired movement.
One of the slots or openings in the strap F is straight at the back end, while the other is suitably shaped to allow the free rocking movement of the part D.
\Vhen it is desired to attach the chain to the watch, the movable part D is pressed inward with the finger a sufficient distance to allow the passage of the watch-ring. When upon the release of the pressure it will be thrown back by the spring and retained in its former position.
Different forms of springs may be used to act upon the part D without departing from the principle of my invention.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a watch-chain swivel, the combination of the barrel A, the loop 13, the strap F, and
' the spring E, the strap F resting over the lower end of loop B, and having the edges of barrel A turned over it and into grooves or de pressions in loop B, substantially as described. 2. The combination of the barrel A, the loop B, strap F, collar H, and spring E, the strap F resting over the lower ends of loop 13, and the collar H resting under one part and encompassing the sides of the other part of the lower end ofloop B, substantially as described.
