LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 314,252, dated March 24-, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALols KOEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and ence marked thereon, which form a part of.
this specification.
My invention, to be hereinafter distinctly claimed, relates to improvements in that class of lamps that burn kerosene, now in common use, the object of which invention is to provide mechanism by which a lighted lamp will be automatically extinguished when such lamp is overturned accidentally or otherwise.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the metal lamp-top (the cone being thrown back) having my device attached. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the metal lamp-top having one side of the inclosing-case removed, showing my device attached; Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details. Fig. 6 is a top view ofthe lamp-wick tube and my inclosing-sleeve.
Like letters refer to the same parts in all the views.
That part of my device shown complete in Fig. 5, and of which parts are shown in Figs. 3 and 4, consists of the bracket A, having perforated lugs a a and b b, lever B, provided with perforated lugs c c, and having its shorter arm, cl, slightly curved or turned upwardly and its longer arm, 6, provided at its outer extremity with a circular opening or other equivalent means for receiving and holding the weight W, said lever being pivoted to the bracket A by and through the lugs a aand c a, lever G, pivoted to the bracket A within and through the lugs 12, its shorter inner arm being adapted to lie against and be borne upward by the short arm d of lever B, and the coiled wire spring D retained in its position within the lugs 12 b by the pivot that passes through said lugs 12 b, which pivot also passes through the opening of the coil of said spring, oneof the free ends of which spring bears upwardly against the under side of the bracket A, and the other free extremity of whlch spring being movably bent around the longer arm of the lever G bears it upwardly. This device (shown in Fig. 5) is rigidly affiXed to the under side of the lower rim of the metal top of the lamp by rivets or other suitable means.
The lamp-wick tube is provided with a sleeve, E, adapted to move freely upwardly and downwardly on said tube, thetopofwhich sleeve, when the lamp is in use, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is even with the top of the tube. The sleeve E is provided with a rigid perforated lug,f, through which the long arm of lever O is inserted and moves freely, said long arm of said lever b being slightly curved to facilitate its movement in said lug f.
For convenience I attach theweight by a chord to some part of the lamp-top. When the weight V is on the long arm of the lever B, which it always is when the lamp is lighted, the lever Oand sleeve Eare, by the gravity of the weight W, held down in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2; but the moment the weight is removed from the arm of the lever B the spring D forces the long arm of the lever G upward, carrying with it the sleeve E, whereby the top of the wick is inclosed by said upwardly-thrown sleeve and the flame extinguished.
As is obvious, the weight will always fall off the lever B when the lamp is overturned, and the flame, by the action of the sleeve E, will be at once and surely extinguished. This weight can also be at any time intentionally removed and my device be thus used as an extinguisher.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In lamps, the combination of lever B and lever O, pivoted to the lamptop by and through bracket A or other equivalent means, spring D, adapted to forcing the lever G upward, and weight \V, in combination with the sleeve E, provided with rigid lug f, said sleeve being adapted to move freely upwardly and downwardly on the lamp-wick tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
