NITED STATES ATELNT einen.,
ELIAS BEACH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,707, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed March 1G, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ELIAs BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to lamp-extinguishers, and it consistsin the peculiar construction and arrangements of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
In my application filed September 30, 1884,
Serial No. 144,36i, and allowed March l-l, 1885, an Argand burner is illustrated having a horizontal and vertical tube, with a central vertical shaft passing through the same and with a button or spreader on the upper reduced portion of said central shaft. To this form of burner I preferably apply my improved extinguisher; but it is obvious that it may be applied to any other form of burner now 1n use.
The object of my invention is to provide an extinguisher which shall be simple in its construction and consequently easy of operation, and one which shall be partially self-adjustable, and thereby be free from interference with any other parts of the burner. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of one form of my improved burner with the extinguishing device applied. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion ofthe central vertical shalt carrying the button or spreader, showing the manner of arranging the extinguisher in connection with these parts.
A represents an annular ring of metal, which in its normal position lies directly under and in Contact with the button or spreader XV.
. To the underside of the ring A two bracketarms, c a, are secured by. any suitable means, and are so connected to the ring that they will not interfere with the extinguishing-surface thereof. These arms ce extend downward on an incline until they engage and are secured to a collar or sleeve, B, which is mounted and i has Vfree movement on the central vertical shaft l J. To the lower portion of the sleeve B one end of a iiexible arm, C, is secured, which in t this instance is constructed ofa thin flat piece of metal and twisted at a point, c, the lower l end of said arm engaging with one of the arms lof a small bell-crank lever, D, by means of eye d and a pivot or loop, el. To the upper part of the horizontal tube H a bracket, E, is secured, which is pivoted to the fulcrum-eye d of the bellcrank lever D. 'Io the third eye, d, of this bell-crank lever a small wire draw-rod, F, is secured by a loop or hook, f, formed on the inside endthereof. This rod F extends out to the exterior of the burner, and has formed on its outermost end an eye, f, which has a ring or knob, F', inserted therein. Encircling this rod F is a coiled spring, G, secured at its extreme inside end to one of the arms of the bell-crank lever D by suitable means, the other end of said spring being held against the inside portion of the outermost wall of the burner.
The operation of my improved extinguisher is as follows: By means of the ring F', connected to the rod F, said rod is pulled out, and through the action of the bell-crank lever D and the flexible arm C, connected to said lever at one end and to the sleeveB at the other, which sleeve is attached to the arms a, holding the annular ring A, the clear surface of the under side of the extinguishingring is drawn down upon the dame, thus extinguishing it. Vhen the bell-crank lever D is drawn out of its normal position, it is forced against the coiled spring E, in consequence of the spring resting against one arm of said lever, and necessarily becomes contracted so long as the rod F is drawn out; but when said rod F is released the resilient force of said coiled spring forces the arm of the bell-crank lever, against which it rests, back to its normal position, and consequently the annular extinguishingring resumes its normal position under the button or spreader NV.
By having the extinguishingsurfacc constructed in the form of an annular ring the tendency toward an explosion is avoided when the said ring is suddenly brought in contact with the flame, for if any gases have arisen in l any of the tubes with which it comes into con- IOO tact during the process of combustion they are allowed to escape through the opening of said extinguisher, as Well as at the outer edge thereof, and ascend up through the globe or chimney. This extinguishing-ring is constructed of such diameter or width that when it is lowered it covers the wick and theoutside edge of the Wick-tube, thus covering the entire source of flame.
By the simple construction and arrange` ment of my device, and its eftciency of operation, an extinguisher is provided which can be cheaply manufactured, readily applied, and at the same time be safe and economical in its use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto'secure by Letters Patent, is-= l. The' combination, with an Argand burner, of a central shaft supporting a spreader, an annular extinguishing-ring resting against saidspreader with suitable supports for holding said ring on said shaft, and meansl for raising and lowering said ring, substantially as described. Y
2. The combination, with an Argand burner, of a central shaft supporting a spreader, an annular ring resting normally against said spreader, a sleeve encircling said shaft and attached to said ring by bracket-arms, and means for operating said sleeve to raise and lower the extinguishing-ring, substantially as described, and for the purposes set Yforth.
3. The combination, with an Argand burner, of a central shaft, a spreader, an extinguishing-ring resting normally against said spreader and movably secured to said shaft by means of a sleeve and bracket-arms, a flexible arm attached to said sleeve, a bellcrank lever hinged to said arm and to said burner, a draw-rod, a spiral spring mounted thereon, and a ring for operating said draw rod, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with an Argand burner, of a central shaft, an annularring, A, bracket-arms aa, sleeve B, exible arm C, belli-crank lever D, hanger E, draw-rod F, spiral spring G, and a ring, F', arrangedas described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony Where/of I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
