SPECIFIGA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 660,899, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed April 3, 1900. Serial No. 11,333. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN HAGEN, aciti- Zen of the United States, residing at Cashton, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Candle-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both of the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied, and Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same with the parts in position for extinguishing the flame.
The improvement consists, essentially, in a candle-holder A of-any approved construction and adapted to be attached to a limb of a Christmas tree or other device B on which i it is to be used. Said holder is arranged to support a candle C in any suitable manner, and the candle itself is adapted to carry at its upper end a support D, moving with the candle as the candle burns away, said support being formed with an angular arm D, having an elongated slot through which extends loosely a vertically-disposed guide E, attached to or forming part of the holderA.
The arm D is provided with an angularlyextending arm D formed at its end with a catch D adapted to be engaged by the hook F of a combination reflector and extinguisher F, provided at its lower end with an arm F extending through the'slot in the arm D and having a slidable connection with the guide E. Thus when the support D is in position and the combination reflector and extinguisher F is hung by its hook F on the catch D the said reflector stands in an angular position relative to the flame of the candle, so as to reflect the light thereof in a proper manner, it being understood that the said combination reflector and extinguisher moves downward with the support D as the latter graduallyslides downwardasthe candleburns away.
of the candle from igniting other objects on the Christmas tree located above thecandle.
When the device is in use, as shown in Fig. 1, and the candle C is lighted and burns away, the light of the candle is properly reflected into the room by the reflector F, and when the candle C is nearly burned away the lower end of the arm F strikes the bottom of the guide E, so that on further downward movement of the support D the hook F is disengaged from the catch D and consequently the com bination reflector and extinguisher F swings over upon the flame, so as to extinguish the same. It is to be understood that by guiding the arm F in the arm D of the support and on the guide E the said combination reflector and extinguisher swings in the proper direction for extinguishing the flame, as above described.
If desired, a stop G in the form of a collar with a set-screw, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, may be used on the vertical guide E, so as toset the device to extinguish the flame at any desired length of the candle, it being understood that when the support D moves downward the lower end of the arm F strikes and rests on the said stop to cause the hook F to disengage the catch D on the subsequent fnrther downward movement of the support D.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, is not liable to get out of order, can be readily set up, and the combination reflector and extinguisher is positively tripped to cause the extinction of the flame, as above described.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, as it is evidentthat the tripping device for the reflector can be diiferently arranged without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
lco
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved candle-holder and automatic extinguisher, comprising a holder proper to which the candle may be attached, a vertical guide extending therefrom, an angular piece adapted to rest on the candle, and projecting forward or toward the candle at its upper end, and having a sliding connection with said guide, and the extinguisher proper, having a sliding connection with the guide at its lower end, and adapted for detachable engagement with the said angular piece at their upper ends, as shown and described.
2. The candle-holder proper having an attachment for resting on a tree-limb, or other suitable support, a guide-wire E, having a horizontal base portion and extending upward from such holder, a flat reflector and extinguisher plate, havingan arm projecting downward and adapted to slide on said guide, and supported above and inclined toward the holder proper, and a support for said plate, which has an angular form and is adapted to rest on the candle and slide on the guide, the
said plate and support having a loose engage-
